Wednesday 29th February, two fully armored vehicles carrying a dozen Israeli occupation soldiers broke into the campus of the Institute of Modern Media, a part of Al Quds University which houses the department of media studies and Al Quds Educational TV Station (AQTV), damaging and seizing equipment, including the television transmitter. The raid apparently included plain-clothes Shin Bet forces.
Classes were suspended today as students demonstrated outside the campus, and the University attempted to assess the damage.
At 3.30 this morning, two Israeli jeeps pulled up outside the campus. When the (lone) University guard did not open the gate, Israeli occupation forces entered a site next door and breached it to access the campus. The guard was polite and offered them tea or coffee, but they threatened him with arrest if he did not fully cooperate, confiscated his ID card and demanded to be shown the room with the transmitter. They searched the station and broke down a door to which the guard did not have the key (as the room is used by a local internet company) and tore out the internet cables. Eventually, they reached the room with the transmitter and seized it.
Al Quds University condemns in the strongest terms, and calls on the international community to join in its condemnation of this – and previous – unprovoked and unjustified invasions of Al-Quds University campuses and the illegal seizure of University property and harassment of University personnel. It is a blatant violation of the Oslo peace accords between the Palestinians and the Israelis, as the campus is located in Area A. It is an unacceptable military invasion of a university campus, and it takes direct aim at two basic freedoms, the freedom of the press and the freedom or right to education.
AQTV, established in 1996, is aimed at promoting well-being in Palestinian society. Many of its programs are specifically educational, focusing on children, such as "sharea simsim"(Sesame Street) produced in conjunction with Sesame Workshop in New York. The TV also broadcasts lectures from the university and makes films on public awareness programs on behalf of civil society working closely, for example, with the PA Ministry of Health on anti-anti-smoking campaigns, for instance, and the PA Ministry of Social Affairs. The Institute of Modern Media is also supported by USAID, which recently funded a state-of-the art multimedia lab at the campus that was attacked.
Lucy Nusseibeh, Director of the IMM at Al Quds University said: "We are in shock, and this is a rude awakening for all of our students as we teach them about the importance of the freedom of expression, and about what it means to be under a military occupation, even in Ramallah. We are an educational institution and this military raid is entirely unacceptable.
Al Quds Educational Television is fully licensed by the Palestinian Ministry of Telecommunications, and frankly, even if the Israeli army did want our transmitter, there was absolutely no need to attack the university campus in the dead of night and start smashing down doors, or intimidate our poor security guard. We would like to thank everyone for reaching out to support us in this difficult time."

IOF soldiers storm, close Watan TV

Big numbers of Israeli occupation forces (IOF) and intelligence officers broke into the premises of the Watan TV station and its website in downtown Ramallah at dawn Wednesday.
The IOF soldiers detained the four workers present in the premises for a few hours and confiscated its main transmission equipment, all computers, and official papers and documents in the building’s administration.
One of the TV staffers said on the Watan TV that the IOF soldiers suddenly stormed the building in a pre-dawn raid and detained all workers present and wreaked havoc on the station and objected to the presence of a photo of Khader Adnan hanged on one of the walls.
Adnan, an Islamic Jihad leader, almost died while on hunger strike for 66 days in Israeli jails protesting his illegal administration detention. He ended his strike on the 67th day when an agreement was reached with his lawyer by which he would be freed in April.
Soldiers raid Ramallah TV stations
Israeli forces raided two Palestinian television networks early Wednesday in Ramallah and briefly detained four employees, journalists said.
Soldiers confiscated computers used by editors and reporters in the newsroom and administrative offices as well as administrative and financial files, Watan TV said.
Israeli troops also raided the Al-Quds Educational TV in Al-Bireh and confiscated its broadcasting equipment, the head of its TV department Haroun Abu Irreh told Ma'an.
"This attack is nothing but piracy under a policy of systematic attack targeting Palestinian media organizations and journalists," Watan TV said in a statement.
The network "deplores this aggressive behavior against an efficient and effective media organization," and said it will restore the stolen equipment and transmitters and to try to resume broadcasts.
An Israeli army spokeswoman said soldiers were accompanying an operation by the country's communications ministry, which had determined that Watan TV was broadcasting illegally.
"The station has been asked many times to cease their broadcasting which significantly interrupts other legal broadcasting stations," an army spokeswoman told Ma'an. "During the operation and in accordance with law, the communications ministry confiscated several transmitters."
"Illegal broadcasting interfered with aircraft communication, which is very, very dangerous."
Abu Irreh of Al-Quds Educational TV called the events of Wednesday morning "harassment to media and education stations and a way to shut the mouths of media and reporters."
Watan TV identified the four employees who were detained as head of production Abdul Rahman Thaher, correspondent Hamza Salaymeh, graphics expert Ibrahim Milhim and broadcaster Ahmad Zaki.
They were released after several hours, the network said.

The soldiers "responded by firing, injuring the Palestinian in his shoulder." ![]() Israeli Forces Storm Al Aqsa Plaza in Violent Clashes with Worshippers
Tala't Ramia, (Ramieh) 25 Violent clashes took place Friday between Palestinian worshippers, Jewish settlers and Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) troops who stormed the ancient al Aqsa Mosque plazas just after the noon prayers The ongoing threat by extremist Jewish groups to "take" the al Aqsa Mosque has caused a reverberation around the globe. The mosque in question has been in place for over a thousand years, and there is no explanation for the lack of reverence by those looking for an unnecessary fight. Eyewitnesses said that the IOF troops fired teargas canisters and stun grenades, and Palestinian worshippers responded with stones. Hebrew radio quoted police sources that the IOF arrested more than 40 Palestinians from Jerusalem and 1948- occupied Palestinian areas, allegedly for throwing stones at IOF troops at the Maghareba gate, one of the main gates of the Aqsa Mosque. The IOF had restricted entry to the Aqsa Mosque barring young Palestinians from attending the prayers. The first life claimed in this ongoing dispute was a 25-year old Palestinian man, Tala’t Ramieh, from the village of Ram. He was killed by the Israeli occupation forces at the Qalandia roadblock. Eyewitnesses said he was shot with a live bullet in the chest. Palestinian medical sources said that Ramieh arrived at the hospital in critical condition and he underwent a number of surgeries, but doctors failed to save him and he died on Friday evening. The IOF troops also wounded six others, including a photojournalist and two children; |
the injury to one of the children is serious. Dozens suffered breathing difficulties as a result of inhaling teargas.
The funeral for Tala’t Ramieh will be held Saturday at 10:00 am from the Palestinian Medical Center to Al Raam city, and he will be buried after the afternoon prayer at 12:30.
There were fifteen more demonstrators injured Friday afternoon by IOF troops in the southern West Bank city of al-Khalil. They were marking the 18th anniversary of the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre.
Those commemorating the tragic event also demanded the re-opening of Shuhada Road. Shuhada Road is a major thoroughfare through the city linking east to west, and has been closed to Palestinians since the massacre in 1994.
On 25 February 1994, Baruch Goldstein, an American Jew who immigrated to Palestine and chose to live in Keryat Arba', a Jewish settlement built on land confiscated from Palestinians, walked into the Ibrahimi Mosque during dawn prayers and threw grenades and opened fire at worshippers killing 29 and wounding 125.
By closing the road to Palestinians, they effectively punished the victims, and have for nearly twenty years.
Meanwhile in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, an enormous statement was made when tens of thousands of Palestinians participated in the demonstration which Hamas called for in support of the Aqsa Mosque.
People poured in from six mosques in the city towards the Grand mosque at the centre of Khan Younis where they merged with worshippers from the Grand Mosque. Then they marched the streets of the city chanting support for the Aqsa Mosque and called on Palestinians to prepare to make sacrifices in defence of the first Muslim Qibla (direction of prayer) and the third holiest Shrine in Islam in the face of Zionist aggression against the many Muslim and Christian holy places in the holy city. Jerusalem, the city of peace.
Parade participants raised green and Palestinian flags. The Ahrar movement and other Palestinian factions took part in the demonstration to stress Palestinian unity in face of aggression against their holy places.
Dr. Slah al-Bardaweel, speaking on behalf of Hamas, told participants that Palestinians should be preparing to sacrifice everything precious for Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque which are facing "vicious Judaization schemes with Zionists trying to impose facts on the ground which Palestinians and Muslims the world over cannot accept".
Representatives from many other religions around the world join their quest to keep the holy places in tact, and protected, and peaceful.

The Hebrew radio quoted police sources that the Israeli occupation police arrested more than 40 Palestinians who hail from Jerusalem and 1948- occupied Palestinian areas accusing them of throwing stones at IOF troops at Maghareba gate, one of the main gates of the Aqsa Mosque, during confrontations that took place between Palestinian worshippers and extremist Jewish settlers who attempted to storm the mosque.
There were many calls made for Palestinians in Jerusalem and 1948- occupied areas to keep regular presence at the Aqsa Mosque to protect against escalating Israeli aggressions against it and against other Muslim and Christian holy places in the holy city.
Al-Quds International Institution has earlier warned that the coming few weeks are expected to witness an escalation in settler attacks against the holy shrine.

Palestinian sources reported Friday that clashes took place between dozens of youths at the Al-Aqsa mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, and Israeli soldiers who fired gas bombs at them leading to several injuries.
The clashes took place following the Friday noon prayers at the mosque. Eyewitnesses reported that the youth hurled stones at the soldiers who were extensively deployed in the area preventing hundreds from entering the mosque. The soldiers fired gas bombs and concussion grenades; several residents suffocated after inhaling gas fired by the army. The Al-Aqsa Foundation for Endowment and Heritage reported that dozens of soldiers broke into the area of the main mosque, Al Masjid Al-Qibli, and |
attacked dozens of protestors causing several injuries and leading to clashes. The Foundation added that undercover forces of the Israeli army were also deployed on the rooftop of the Al-Qibli mosque and chased dozens of protestors.
It is worth mentioning that thousands of Palestinians headed to the Al-Aqsa mosque for Friday prayers amidst threats by Israeli extremists to break into the mosque “to prove ownership” according to the extremists.
Israel also intensified its military and security arrangement in occupied East Jerusalem and around the Al-Aqsa mosque, and prevented hundreds from reaching it.
