Two Palestinians were moderately injured by Israeli gunfire Friday at protests on the eastern border of the Gaza Strip.
The protests were smaller than the usual weekly protests have been, as Palestinians in Gaza gear up for major protests on Saturday to commemorate the 43rd Palestinian Land Day.
It was Land Day 2018 that sparked the weekly protest movement known as the Great March of Return, which has taken place every week since March 30, 2018, and has resulted in the deaths of nearly 200 Palestinian protesters shot by Israeli sharpshooters, and the serious injuries of more than 11,000, according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights.
Friday’s protests took place in four locations along the eastern border of Gaza, with Israeli tanks and troops lined up on the other side of the border.
The troops and tanks have been amassing there since Monday, apparently planning for a land invasion of Gaza to accompany the airstrikes that have been ongoing all week, and have destroyed at least thirty buildings, including high rise apartment and office buildings.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, two Palestinians were moderately wounded in their legs with live gunfire from Israeli snipers. The injuries took place at the protest east of Jabaliya, in the northern part of the West Bank.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from all over Gaza are expected to participate in the Land Day protests on Saturday, and Palestinian leaders have urged the Israeli military to show restraint and to stop their practice of indiscriminately firing live ammunition toward the unarmed protesters, as they have done every week since the protests began one year ago.

Israeli forces suppressed the weekly Kafr Qaddum march in the northern occupied West Bank district of Qalqiliya, on Friday, commemorating the 43rd anniversary of Land Day and in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
Coordinator of the local popular committee in the village, Murad Ishteiwi, said that Israeli forces attacked protesters using fired rubber-coated bullets and tear-gas bombs.
Palestinian youths responded by throwing rocks and empty bottles.
No injuries nor detentions were reported.
Ishteiwi added that hundreds of locals took part in the march that was called for by the Fatah movement in commemoration of Land Day and in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
Residents of Kafr Qaddum stage regular protests against land confiscations as well as the closure of the village's southern road by Israeli forces. The road is the main route to the nearby city of Nablus, the nearest economic center.
The Israeli Prison Services (IPS) has recently imposed strict restrictions on dozens of Palestinian Hamas-affiliated prisoners, accusing them of taking part in the recent developments inside Israeli prisons.
Ninety Palestinian prisoners held at section 3 of the Negev prison, in southern Israel, were handcuffed to their beds overnight last Monday, following raids in different sections of the prison that left hundreds of Palestinian prisoners injured after Hamas-affiliated prisoners stabbed two Israeli prison guards.

The Higher National Committee for Return and Breaking the Siege in Gaza called for an unprecedented millionth participation on Saturday, coinciding with the first anniversary the Return Marches.
In a press conference held on Monday, the commission said that it would not step back from land and sea marches until it achieves its goals, stressing that the Return Marches are a peaceful movement of the Palestinian people to restore their rights.
The first anniversary of the return marches will take place on 30th of March, coinciding with the annual anniversary of Land Day.
The commission member, Ahmed Al-Mudalal, called on Palestinians to join the rally by the millions, Al Ray Palestinian Media Agency reports.
“It will witness [a] million [in] Palestinian masses that will restore glory to our cause and strength of our people,” he said, calling on the national community to mobilize and participate in it.
He stressed, according to Al Ray, that the March of Return and Breaking Siege, with all available resources, will continue, explaining that “it emphasizes the unity of our people and the vitality of its cause, and will never stop until the achievement of its objectives in full.”
Since 30 March, 2018, Palestinian citizens have been holding demonstrations in “Return Camps”, in the eastern Gaza Strip’s five governorates, calling for the right of return and the breaking of the 13-year-old blockade.
Between 26 and 27 March 2019, Al-Haq, along with other Palestinian, regional and international organizations, sent letters to the diplomatic community in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT), the UN Secretary-General and High Commissioner for Human Rights, calling on them to take action ahead of the one-year commemoration of the Great Return March, to ensure that Palestinians’ rights to life and to freedom of peaceful assembly are protected.
Since 30 March, 2018, the Israeli occupation forces have systematically and deliberately resorted to lethal and other excessive force to suppress the Great Return March in the occupied Gaza Strip, killing at least 197 Palestinians within the context of the demonstrations, including 42 children, eight persons with disabilities, three paramedics, and two journalists.
In addition, over 29,000 Palestinians have been injured, according to the World Health Organization, including over 6,500 by live ammunition, of whom more than 1,200 have been left with complex limb injuries requiring multiple surgeries and long-term follow up.
Last May, Al-Haq and other human rights organizations sent an open letter to the UN ahead of the 70th commemoration of the Palestinian Nakba, as part of the Great Return March. The UN failed to take action to prevent the brutal killings and massive suppression of peaceful demonstrators in the Gaza Strip on 14 May.
As large-scale civilian protests are expected to take place, once again, on and around 30 March 2019, Al-Haq urged “the international community to take meaningful action to prevent further unnecessary loss of life and injury by the Israeli occupying forces, which entails individual criminal responsibility, as found by the UN Commission of Inquiry on the 2018 OPT Protests.”
“In this context, Israel must be strictly reminded of its obligation under international human rights law not to resort to lethal and other excessive force against Palestinians participating in the “Great Return March”, and to ensure the protection, in particular, of individuals with special protected status under international law, including children, persons with disabilities, health workers, and journalists,” Al-Haq and other rights group said in a statement, according to WAFA.

Ola Awad, president of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), commemorated the upcoming anniversary of Land Day (March 30), by publishing a report on Thursday, demonstrating that Israeli theft of Palestinian land has persisted through the 43 years since it began.
On March 30, 1976, Palestinians inside Israel protested against the Israeli government announcement of the seizure of 21,000 dunams (5,189 acres) of Palestinian land. The Israeli police violently suppressed the demonstrations, killing 6 young Palestinians, and injuring and arresting many others.
Every year, Palestinian citizens of Israel, and Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza and abroad, commemorate Land Day with marches and remembrance.
Land Day 2019 coincides with the one year anniversary of the Great March of Return demonstrations in Gaza, where Palestinians are demanding their right to return to the land that is now known as Israel, as well as an end to the 12 year blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel and Egypt. During 2018, 312 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, including 57 children and 3 women, with nearly 30,000 injured over the same period of time.
The total area of historical Palestine is 27, 000 square kilometres, 85% of which is under Israeli military control. Therefore only 15% of the ancestral land is available for indigenous Palestinians to cultivate their land. According to the report, an increase in settlement activity was seen over the course of 2018, with the Israeli occupation approving the construction of 9,384 new housing units, as well as the establishment of 9 new settlement outposts.
According to the PCBS report, 7,122 trees were uprooted in 2018, with over one million trees destroyed by the Israeli occupation forces between the years 2000 and 2019. More Israeli violations against the Palestinian people include home demolitions, forced displacement of communities, and families, not to mention the daily incursions by Israeli forces into countless neighbourhoods across the West Bank.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyya, whose office was bombed into rubble on Monday night by Israeli bombs dropped by F16 fighter jets, made his first public appearance since the attack, on Wednesday evening. He said that the Palestinian resistance had made clear their intentions for peace, and that “The Occupying Power [Israel] has heard the message.” Now, he said, it is up to Israel to decide if they will go the way of war or peace.
The Egyptian officials are scheduled to be in Gaza overnight until Thursday. Israeli bombings, drone strikes, sound bombs and other weapons continue to be dropped on the Gaza Strip by the Israeli airforce.
The negotiators are from the Egyptian General Intelligence Service. They are said to have met with Israeli officials on Monday night, and had claimed at that time that a ceasefire was imminent – but Israeli bombardment continued without abatement through Tuesday and continuing into Wednesday.
On Friday, the weekly non-violent protest at the border between Gaza and Israel is scheduled to take place, and then on Saturday, Palestinians across Gaza, the West Bank and around the world will commemorate Palestinian Land Day with massive protests against Israeli land confiscation, imprisonment of the Gaza Strip and illegal and wanton use of military force against civilian populations.
Palestinian Land Day marks the anniversary of a non-violent protest in 1976, following the Israeli government’s seizure of thousands of acres of Palestinian land to annex for the Jewish state.
At that time, protests against the land confiscation were also met by deadly force imposed by the Israeli police, who killed six unarmed Palestinian protesters.
