Defense for Children International Palestine (DCIP) paints a bleak prospect for Palestinian children in revealing that in 2018, at least 56 were killed by Israel.
Individuals who witnessed some of the murders have insisted that the targeted children were unarmed and posed no threat to the state or its citizens.
Palestinian children have been killed by Israeli army snipers, drones and security forces across the occupied Palestinian territories. Five of the murdered children were under 12 years of age. In Gaza, 49 children were murdered by Israel in activities pertaining to the Great March of Return protests.
Live ammunition was used by Israel in 73 percent of the fatalities documented by DCIP, which also recorded “140 cases of Palestinian children who were detained by Palestinian forces.” Israeli forces also arrested 120 children within the occupied West Bank. In both groups, the detained children suffered abuse at the hands of the security forces holding them, whether the PA or the Israeli military.
These tactics show that Israel’s colonial collaboration with the Palestinian Authority is targeting a very vulnerable segment of Palestinian society. What’s more, the killing and wounding of Palestinian children by Israeli snipers at the Great March of Return is a direct maiming of the generation which can carry on the anti-colonial struggle.
Citing international law is pointless when Israel, and even the Palestinian Authority, have extended the parameters for an ongoing cycle of abuse against Palestinian children. International law is only relevant when used to point out that violations are taking place and the Palestinians are facing a UN member state which treats international law with contempt, while the international community gives its tacit agreement to the abuse and is, in some cases, complicit.
DCIP’s research establishes the fact that Israel killed an average of more than one child per week in 2018. Earlier shocking official statistics revealed that between 2000 and 2014 Israel killed a Palestinian child every three days on average, for fourteen years. Throughout the year there was ongoing discussion about Israel’s genocidal intent and actions which were mostly discarded due to the monopoly over the term in reference to the Holocaust. Yet, Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defines the term as “acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.” What else is Israel doing to the people of Palestine, “in whole or in part”?
The international community’s responses are so predictable that Israel finds no obstacles in maneuvering beyond the limits set by international law; it is allowed to act with impunity. The “drip, drip” rate of the killing of Palestinian children and the almost routine nature of their detention sneaks under the radar of human rights violations. As the international community fails to respond to Israeli violations within its established framework, Israel succeeds in bridging the gap between violations and rights.
To speak of Israel’s violations now is, in fact, also to speak of the international community’s irresponsibility. Yet neither are scrutinized and held to account; the result is the regular yet somewhat reluctant citing of what should happen according to international law being juxtaposed against Israeli breaches of the law. Accountability, however, has long since absconded from the scene of the crime. If Israel wants to kill Palestinian children (or women and men, come to that), it will kill because it has decided, quite deliberately, to do so.
Meanwhile, the international community will steer clear from ever associating Israeli actions with genocide, preferring instead to rely on “alleged war crimes”, the perpetrators of which will never be brought to justice. Palestinian children killed by Israel over many years, last year included, have been forgotten by the world.

The words of patience and description of pain seem to be “unable” to explain the situation of Al-Issawi family from the Gaza Strip. It is the story of a family that gave one of its children as a martyr, while the rest of the children were injured, with their courageous and wounded mother shedding her tears over their situation.
The wounds of the five brothers vary between serious and moderate. The doctors removed the intestines of some of them, while shrapnel penetrated the lungs of one of them and crushed the bones of others. All of them are still suffering from endless pain.
In the presence of this patient family, a wound is hardly healed before another one opens. Atef Al-Issawi, 25, was paralyzed from the waist down following nine injuries on the Gaza Strip fence.
Protester despite disability
Al-Issawi’s friends and relatives gather around his wheelchair which is new to him. Atef used to move lightly along the fence with platinum bars fixed in his legs.
“I came today to participate in the Great March of Return, but this time on a wheelchair. I have sustained nine injuries, and I am still demanding the right of return and breaking the siege. My thoughts are with the prisoners and the wounded and the families of martyrs despite my disability now,” he told the PIC reporter.
He pointed out that he was shot by the Israeli snipers for the first time in 2007, followed by four consecutive injuries in 2015, as well as injuries in 2016 and during the Great March of Return in 2018.
He continued: “The last injury was in October last year, and caused nerve damage, paralysis in the limbs, and I was placed on a wheelchair unable to move.”
He declares with a challenging tone the continuation of peaceful protests along with his family, despite the injury of his body. His voice faded as he called on the President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas to cover his treatment expenses and to send him outside Gaza to get proper treatment.
Paralyzed and poor
The bursts of explosive bullets ended in Atef's legs which have been punctuated by platinum bars several times. The most recent bullet has resulted in the deterioration of his condition resulting in a paralysis in his legs and right arm.
Al-Issawi was one of the witnesses at an Israeli military court which was held two years ago to consider the murder of child Abdul Rahman Al-Dabbagh (killed by an Israeli soldier who fired a bomb directly at his head) and was famous for having many details of the stories of the wounded and martyrs, because of his frequent participation in the Great March of Return.
All his grieving mother wishes for is for her children to receive needed treatment and care, adding: “I was injured in September 2018 with a bullet in my neck during my participation in the Great March of Return. Our lives have become very difficult. Every day I take care of five injured children, but I continue participating in the peaceful protests. I hope that my children will receive care and treatment.”
Meanwhile, Mazen, the youngest brother, hopes that his brother Atef will receive the necessary treatment and care, because he has the most serious injury among them.

Israeli warplanes struck a resistance site east of Khan Younis, to the south of the Gaza Strip on Sunday evening.
According to the PIC reporter, no initial casualties were reported during the air raids.
A second resistance site was also targeted east of Gaza city.
A third target was hit in east of Jabalia city, in the north of the Gaza Strip, causing damage but no injuries.
Commenting on the attack, Israeli army claimed that the air raids came in response to incendiary balloons launched from the enclave.
"Earlier today, an explosive device attached to multiple balloons was launched on a model airplane from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory. In response, IDF attack helicopters targeted two Hamas military posts in the Gaza Strip," a statement from Israeli army said following the attack.
Israel said the attacks came after Palestinians flew rigged balloons into southern Israel which fell without causing any damage or injury.Israeli forces regularly strike sites in the besieged Gaza Strip claiming they target resistance sites, however, thousands of Palestinians have been left homeless as a result.
These frequent air raids and sniper fire at the Gaza-Israel fence have led to hundreds of deaths since Palestinians launched popular protests calling for the end of the 11-year siege and for their right of return.

Thousands of Palestinians marched on Friday along the border fence separating the Gaza Strip and the 1948 occupied Palestinian territories for the 41st week in a row.
The Higher National Committee for the Great March of Return and Breaking the Siege had earlier called on the Palestinians in Gaza to take part in Friday's demonstrations protesting the latest wave of normalization of relations between Israel and some Arab countries.
The Palestinians in Gaza on 30 March 2018 started major demonstrations along the border fence to demand the right of return for refugees and call for an end to the 13-year-long blockade on Gaza.
Since the start of the border protests, the Israeli occupation army has killed 256 Palestinians and injured over 25,000, 500 of whom are in a critical condition.
Israeli Soldiers Injure Fifteen Palestinians, Including Medics And A Journalist
Israeli soldiers injured, Friday, at least fifteen Palestinians, including one doctor and six paramedics, during the Great Return Match processions in the besieged and impoverished Gaza Strip, after the army resorted to the excessive use of force against the nonviolent protesters, holding the weekly processions for the 41st consecutive week.
The Palestinian Health Ministry has reported that the soldiers shot fifteen Palestinians, including six paramedics, one doctor and one journalist, after targeting them with live fire and high-velocity gas bombs.
It added that the soldiers shot Mohammad Abu Kashef, a medic with the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS), with a high-velocity gas bomb, fracturing his arm, east of Jabalia, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
The soldiers also shot Rafi Shaldan, a medic with the PMRS, with a high-velocity gas bomb in his pelvis, east of Gaza city.
In addition, the soldiers shot another medic, identified as Mohammad Abu T’eima, with a gas bomb in his head, east of Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.
Many Palestinians suffered the severe effects of teargas inhalation, in addition to various cuts, bruises and burns.
The army resorted to the excessive use of force against the Palestinians along the perimeter fence, east of Gaza city, the al-Boreij refugee camp in central Gaza, in addition to Khan Younis and Rafah in the southern part, and Jabalia in northern Gaza.
In a statement, the head of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, strongly denounced the ongoing and escalating Israeli excessive use of force against the unarmed civilians, medical teams and journalists.
Dr. Barghouthi stated that the soldiers injured six of the PMRS medics in several parts of the Gaza Strip, Friday, while they were performing their humanitarian duties in providing the urgently needed medical aid to wounded Palestinians.
He added that the soldiers deliberately target medical teams with live fire, in addition to rubber-coated steel bullets, gas bombs and concussion grenades, and stated that the soldiers use the high-velocity gas bombs as projectiles targeting the Palestinians hundreds of meters away from the perimeter fence.
Dr. Barghouthi denounced these escalating violations, and said the soldiers have killed three medics, and injured dozens, since the Great Return March nonviolent processions started on the Palestinian Land Dar, March 30th, 2018, and called on the International Community to hold Israel accountable for its crimes and violations of basic human rights, including its deliberate targeting of medics and journalists.
Last Friday, December 28th 2018, the soldiers killed one Palestinian civilian with disability, and injured eighteen others, including four children and two paramedics.
On Friday, December 21st, the soldiers killed three Palestinians, including one child, and injured 115 others, including two journalists and four medics, in Gaza.
It is worth mentioning that the soldiers have killed three medics identified as Razan Najjar, 22, Mousa Jaber Abu Hassanein, 36, and Abdullah al-Qutati, 20, in addition to Photojournalist Yasser Mortaja, and journalist Ahmad Abu Hussein, in the Gaza Strip, and injured dozens of journalists, since the Great Return March processions started on Palestinian Land Day, March 30th 2018.
On December 27th, 2018, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that a total of 295 Palestinians were killed, and over 29,000 were injured in 2018 by Israeli forces.
OCHA added that this is the highest death toll in a single year since the Israeli war on Gaza in the summer, of 2014 and the highest number of injuries recorded since OCHA began documenting casualties in the occupied Palestinian territories in 2005.
About % of the fatalities (180 people) and % the injuries (over 23,000) in the context of Gaza’s ‘Great March of Return’ demonstrations by the fence.
Across the occupied territories, 57 of the Palestinian fatalities and about 7,000 of the injuries were under 18 years of age. A total of 14 Israelis were killed during the year by Palestinians, and at least 137 others were injured.
