Yousafzai at Girl Summit 2014
UNRWA Official Press Release
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Malala Yousafzai, has announced that she is donating 50,000 US dollars to rebuild an UNRWA school damaged during the recent fighting in Gaza. Ms. Yousafzai made the announcement from Stockholm, where she has gone to accept the prestigious World's Children's Prize. The amount represents all the prize money.
Photos and the speech, as delivered by Ms. Yousafzai, will be available on the UNRWA website later this evening. Meanwhile, please feel free to use the version of her speech below and the statement in response to her donation by the UNRWA Commissioner General, Pierre Krähenbühl.
REMARKS BY MALALA YOUSAFZAI ON HER DONATION OF 50,000 US DOLLARS TO UNRWA:
I am honored to announce all my World’s Children’s Prize money will go to help students and schools in an especially difficult place – in Gaza.
I am donating these funds to The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, which is performing heroic work to serve children in Gaza, in very difficult circumstances.
The needs are overwhelming – more than half of Gaza’s population is under 18 years of age. They want and deserve quality education, hope and real opportunities to build a future.
This funding will help rebuild the 65 schools damaged during the recent conflict.
Innocent Palestinian children have suffered terribly and for too long.
We must all work to ensure Palestinian boys and girls, and all children everywhere, receive a quality education in a safe environment.
Because without education, there will never be peace.
Let us stand together for peace and education because together we are more powerful.
Statement by UNRWA Commissioner General, Pierre Krähenbühl:
This morning I sent the following e-mail to the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Ms. Malala Yousafzai.
Dear Ms. Yousafzai, Dear Malala,
We are so deeply touched by your decision to donate USD 50,000, the entire amount of the prestigious “World's Children's Prize”, towards rebuilding an UNRWA school in Gaza damaged during the recent fighting.
Recognition by you, a Nobel Laureate, who has shown so much personal courage and has campaigned so valiantly for the essential right of a child to receive an education, will lift the spirits of a quarter of a million UNRWA students in Gaza and boost the morale of our more than nine thousand teaching staff there. Their suffering during the fighting was devastating and your kindness will do much to ease the pain of recent months.
UNRWA shares with you the profound belief in the importance of education as a means to lift young girls and boys out of isolation, exclusion or oppression. Acquiring skills and knowledge to improve prospects for the future is profoundly engrained in the Palestinian consciousness. I wish therefore to accept your generosity and solidarity with deep gratitude and humility, on behalf of UNRWA itself, on behalf of all of our education staff in Gaza and on behalf of the children of Palestine.
You have become a symbol of the boundless potential that lies within each and every child on earth. You are an aspirational figure to the next generation in Palestine and beyond. You are an inspiration to all of us.
Thank you Malala.
With my very sincere and respectful wishes,
Pierre Krähenbühl, Commissioner General, UNRWA.

Israeli prosecution has demanded a list of charges be brought against Palestinian Member of the Knesset, Hanin Zoabi, saying that she 'threatened' and gave sharp criticism of a Palestinian serving in the Israeli police force.
The Israeli Attorney General ordered the opening of an investigation file regarding complaints by the policeman, after Zoabi scolding him during protest against the latest Israeli aggression on Gaza, saying that he stood at the side of the oppressor, according to the PNN.
Zoabi, following investigation, stated that the charges against her were the offspring of racism and Israeli fascism which escalated during the 51-day military operation in Gaza, which killed some 2,200 Palestinians, most of whom were civilians.
Ms. Zoabi added that "the people who should be prosecuted are the ministers who incite killing and murder".
The Kenesset ordered a 6-month deportation for Zoabi, under the pretext of public statements she gave in protest of political issues, sparking anger among Israelis.
Zoabi encountered wide incitement campaigns from Israelis, according to the PNN, especially in the Kenesset sessions, where she stood against zionism.
Examples of such parliamentary sessions can be seen on Youtube:
The Kenesset resumes the debate of the deportation order tomorrow.

About 50 Palestinian institutions in Europe have set plans and suggestions to deliver aid to the Gaza strip and the families affected by the Israeli war on the Strip in the summer of 2014.
Throughout the past few days, these institutions have held a conference to discuss mechanisms and ways to support the affected Palestinian families.
The decisions concentrated on providing the homeless families with temporary shelters and the wounded with the treatment they need. They also addressed programs to support Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Two themes
Ameen Abu Rashed, the director of al-Wafa campaign, told Al Jazeera Net that the conference, held at the initiative of the campaign in cooperation with the Assembly of Palestinian doctors in Europe, came up with an initiative to cooperate and to coordinate efforts for the sake of supporting Gaza.
He also mentioned that the two main themes of the conference were the medical aid, and the urgent sheltering, promising to renovate 5000 housing units, secure the rents of 3000 houses, support 1500 families and provide 1500 housing units.
As for the medical issues; he pointed out that the Palestinians in Europe took upon themselves to provide treatment for 300 wounded Gazans in coordination with European governmental and non-governmental organizations.
He pointed out that the last Israeli war on Gaza had increased the European sympathy with the Palestinian cause.
Palestinians in Europe try to help, support and alleviate the siege on Gaza, benefiting from the European facilitation and the projects dedicated to support the health and development sectors in the Strip.
Intensifying the medical efforts
For his part, Munther Rajab, the General Coordinator of the Assembly of Palestinian doctors in Europe, said that the meeting approved recommendations to intensify the European medical delegations to Gaza.
It also approved hosting the wounded for treatment, he said, adding that prior approvals will be obtained from the European countries which will receive the wounded, and the embassies in these countries are facilitating this process.
Al-Aqsa Mosque
In another context, the conferees approved the urgent priority of contacting official circles and decision-makers in Europe to clarify the risks of the Israeli violations against Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque.
The participants praised the events that took place in scores of European cities during the last few days, most notably; last Friday's ceremony in the European mosques which addressed the risks threatening Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque in light of the Israeli escalated attacks.

Hundreds of Palestinian homeless civilians and displaced families took to Gaza streets on Monday to voice their deep disenchantment with the world’s apathy regarding their tragedy, urging the UNRWA and the United Nations to press ahead with the launch of the reconstruction process.
The marchers lifted banners and yelled slogans calling on the international community to immediately step in so as to lift the Gaza blockade and secure the access of reconstruction materials into the Strip.
In a statement written on behalf of Gaza’s homeless citizens, the marchers appealed to the donors who have pledged funds for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip to step up pressure and ensure the rebuilding projects be initiated as soon as possible.
“Three months have gone by since the Israeli offensive rocked the Gaza Strip. Gazans have been longing for a spark of hope. Yet the siege is still there and the power crisis has not been enhanced an inch,” the statement read.
“All the people of Gaza who are living without a roof over their head shall stick up for the Palestinian resistance until the Israeli colonizers lift the blockade,” the statement added.
Moe’n Abu Okal, Chairman of the Coordinating Bureau of the Popular Committees for the refugees in the Gaza Strip, slammed the unity government for dragging its feet vis-à-vis the reconstruction process, urging its officials to take up their responsibilities with no further delay.
“I’ve been struggling since a long while to purchase a few cement bags to rebuild my own and only home. But Israel’s harsh siege has made any such endeavor a dream for Gazans,” Ramzi Jabar, member of the military ambulance crew, said as he lamented the mounds of pile into which his home had been turned in the latest Israeli offensive.
“We’ve not been paid for over a month. We’ve become overloaded with burdens and expenses overwhelming us from all directions,” he further charged.
Meanwhile, dozens of Gazans joined another demo staged by youths of al-Buraij refugee camp in protest at the delay in the launch of the reconstruction process with the advent of the winter season.

Zohdi Abdul-Hamid Abu ar-Roos 22
Palestinian medics and workers located, on Monday afternoon, the remains of a young man who was killed when the Israeli army bombarded a mosque in Gaza on August 9, during the Israeli offensive on the coastal region.
Medical sources said Zohdi Abdul-Hamid Abu ar-Roos, 22, died under the rubble of the Al-Qassam Mosque during dawn prayers when the Israeli army fired a missile into the building killing three Palestinians and wounding dozens. Abu ar-Roos is a married father of one daughter.
Hundreds of Palestinians participated in the funeral procession, and ceremony, held on Monday evening.
The slain Palestinian was laid to rest at the Nusseirat Graveyard, in Central Gaza.
Following the bombardment of the mosque, the Palestinians located the remains of three Palestinians killed under the rubble, while ongoing and extensive Israeli bombardment of the besieged and densely populated coastal region forced them to stop.
Although he was presumed dead, his whereabouts remained unknown until his remains were located during the removal of debris as part of a debris removal and reconstruction project.
More than 2,142 Palestinians have been killed during Israeli’s 52-day aggression on Gaza that officially began on July 8, 2014; one day after the Israeli army assassinated eight resistance fighters for firing missiles at them, in two separate attacks.
Many Palestinians died of their wounds after the ceasefire agreement was reached.
The number of slain Palestinians killed by Israeli missiles and shells includes at least 578 children, 264 women, and 103 elderly, while more than 11.100, including 3,374 children, 2,088 women and 410 elderly have been injured.

The Israeli army has been removed from the list of armed forces now taking part in multinational military training exercises on the Italian island of Sardinia following large scale BDS campaign mobilized by international anti-war activists.
Israeli army excluded from military training in Italy On 31 July, the Italian defense ministry published a note without mentioning Israel, saying that the planning stages for the drills had not yet been completed and only upon completion would the participating countries be confirmed.
The prospect of Israeli F-16s using the island to train for bombing missions, combined with the ill-timed delivery to Israel of two Italian trainer jets just after the attacks on Gaza began, created public outrage in Italy, with multiple calls for an embargo on weapons cooperation with Israel.
Fawzi Ismail, president of the Sardinia-Palestine Friendship Association, said, “We can consider this a small victory. It demonstrates that grassroots pressure can affect government decision-making”.
“Public opinion had its say and apparently the Italian government and NATO felt it inopportune to have Israel participate after the attacks on Gaza.”

Director of Hamas's international relations Osama Hamdan said that the buffer zone which the Egyptian army intends to establish in Rafah border area would support Israel's blockade on the Gaza Strip and contribute to the incitement campaign in Egypt against the Palestinian people.
In televised remarks on Sunday, Hamdan stated that Gaza and its people have nothing to do with any events happening in North Sinai governorate, affirming that the Palestinian side in Gaza is always keen on maintaining good relations with Egypt.
He expressed his belief that Israel could be involved in the violent incidents that had happened in Sinai.
As for the indirect ceasefire talks with Israel, Hamdan said that the Egyptian intelligence told his Movement that the coming round of negotiations with Israeli side would be postponed without giving reasons.
He added that this delay would give Israel a chance to disrupt the Palestinian political efforts aimed at improving the economic situation in Gaza
The Egyptian army had declared its intention to establish a buffer zone with Gaza in the Egyptian side of Rafah area in the wake of the deadly bomb attack on one of its military posts last Friday.

The Egyptian army had declared its intention to establish a buffer zone with Gaza in the Egyptian side of Rafah area in the wake of the deadly bomb attack on one of its military posts last Friday.

The indirect ceasefire talks with Israel, which were to resume on Monday, in Cairo, have been postponed until the second half of November, according to the head of the Palestinian negotiations team.
Mr. Azzam Al-Ahmad said tthat he Egyptian officials sponsoring the negotiations postponed them due to an ongoing military operation in northern Sinai and the closure of the Rafah border crossing.
A deadly assault occured in the region, this past Friday, in which around 30 Egyptian soldiers were killed in a car bombing and an armed attack which followed.
Earlier, a spokesman for Hamas, Mr. Fawzi Barhoum, told Ma'an News Agency that Egypt had informed officials of the postponement.
"It's Egypt that will set a new date for indirect talks brokered by Egypt, and Hamas will be invited to that round of talks," he said.
Egypt responded to the attacks by imposing a curfew on North Sinai, closing the Rafah crossing and bombing suspected militant targets in the peninsula.
On August 26, President Mahmoud Abbas announced an end to a 50-day ruthless Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, following serious negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides in Cairo.
Whereas the announcement declared an end to the fighting, discussion of other issues, including the establishment of an airport and a seaport in Gaza, as well as ending the tight Israeli blockade, were put off until further rounds of negotiations on a permanent ceasefire, WAFA reports.

Hamas MP Mushir al-Masri said that Egypt has postponed the convening of indirect truce negotiations between a Palestinian delegation and Israel that was scheduled to start in Cairo on Monday. He told the PIC that a Palestinian delegation was supposed to travel to Cairo via Rafah border crossing on Sunday but closure of the terminal by the Egyptian authorities prevented the delegates’ departure.
The Egyptian authorities officially informed the Palestinian delegation at noon Sunday of the postponement, Masri said, adding, “Apparently the events in Sinai led to the deferment.”
Masri did not mention, however, whether there would be a new date for the negotiations.
Explosions and attacks against Egyptian soldiers in northern Sinai that killed 31 and wounded others had an impact on the Egyptian decision.

Khalil al-Hayya, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, said Israel’s security will pay the price for the delay in rebuilding Gaza after the recent Israeli offensive. Talking to al-Aqsa TV Channel on Saturday evening Hayya said: The Palestinian resistance is able to withstand any projected Israeli aggression.”
He further warned that the Gazan public's patience is running out, calling on the Israeli occupation government to meet the agreements signed in Cairo and press ahead with the entry of the reconstruction materials into the blockaded Strip.
Tackling the prisoners’ exchange issue, Hayya said the entire file is not currently up for discussion and will only be tabled for negotiations if its familiar entryways and means are to be re-taken up.
“The blood of our Egyptian [brothers and sisters] is so dear to our hearts. We shall never allow any evil to cross into Egypt (from our side),” he maintained.
He urged PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to call for elections, declaring: “We are ready to head for the elections free from any anxiety. . . However, that such elections would be exploited as a scarecrow is something we would never tolerate.”

Senior Hamas leader, Ismail Redwan, has ruled out all potential scenarios for the delay of the indirect talks between the Palestinian resistance factions and the Israeli occupation following a deadly bombing in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. Redwan said the Egyptian authorities have not yet notified Hamas to any projected deferral in the talk-sessions, set to kick off Monday.
As for the Palestinian delegation’s access into Egypt, Redwan said: “These are minor details that can be easily worked out”.
The Egyptian authorities closed the Rafah crossing, Gazans’ sole passageway, until further notice due to the muddled security affairs in Sinai, Maher Abu Sabha, the head of the border-crossing directorate said.
At least 30 soldiers were killed Friday in a deadly bombing targeting a military checkpoint in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. Following the attack, Egypt declared a three-month state of emergency in parts of North Sinai, during which a nighttime curfew was also imposed.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Interior Ministry said in a statement on Saturday the Gaza-Egypt borders are well marked out and under full control.
Gaza has nothing to do with what has been going on in the Egyptian territories, the ministry said, adding: “Egypt’s national security is a Palestinian priority.”
The ministry appealed to the Egyptian authorities to open the Rafah crossing as an urgent step aimed at toning down Gazans’ agony.
The ministry offered its deepest and most sincere condolences to the Egyptian people and leadership for such a heinous crime.

Member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) Atef Udwan on Saturday said PM Hamdallah’s dragging of his feet vis-à-vis his promises regarding the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip dealt heavy blows at his credibility as an elected politician. The PLC deputy said in a press release Saturday: “Hamdallah’s countless promises, none of which has been kept, struck a heavy blow at his credibility as a prime minister for the unity government.”
Udwan spoke out against Hamdallah’s procrastination vis-à-vis Gaza’s salary crisis and the rebuilding of what had been destroyed by the latest Israeli offensive on the Strip.
Hamdallah and his substandard government, who were all well received in Gaza, misled Gazans into believing that all the outstanding crises will be soon brought to a standstill. But none of those promises has really seen the day. The Hamdallah team descended Gaza into more chaos, he further charged.
“Gazans’ wounds and pains, deep as they have always been, grew more tragic as Gaza’s homes have been turned into rubble; as civilian families have gone homeless; and as the notorious blockade has grown tougher,” the PLC representative maintained.
He further raised alarm bells over the quasi-permanent closure of border-crossings, the power crisis, and the lack of basic facilities.
Udwan called on the consensus government to either step down or leave once and for all after Gaza’s state of affairs has gone from bad to worse.

Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said that its last battle with the Israeli occupation had delivered a severe blow the fighting spirit of its forces and exploded the myth of its invincible army. This came during a ceremony held in Khan Younis under the theme "A nation constructing its victory" to honor the families of more than 600 martyrs killed during the last Israeli war in Gaza.
"Al-Qassam had already declared ahead of Al-Asef Al-Makoul battle that it would fight a war to break the enemy's fighting spirit, and the martyrs contributed to crush its will and dispel the legend of its routed army," a spokesman for the Brigades said during the ceremony.
"The heroic acts and triumphs of your Brigades and all men of honor from the other factions on the battlefield have been achieved by the grace of God and then by our preparedness because we know very well that only the language of force works out with the usurping enemy," the spokesman added.
