The only medicine company in the Gaza Strip was targeted during the Israeli offensive, causing the company half a million dollars in losses, executives said Monday.
The general manager of Middle East Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Laboratories, or Megapharm, told Ma'an that the company lost almost $500,000 after airstrikes hit equipment, raw material and electricity generators. Dr. Marwan al-Astal added that the company produces only medicine, and Israel has no “excuse” for targeting it “because they know it is a medicine company.” The company needs at least two months to recover and rebuild what has been destroyed by Israeli attacks. |
Navy continues to breach ceasefire
Israeli soldiers shot and injured a Palestinian man near Karm Abu-Salem (Kerem Shalom) border crossing, on the Gaza-Israel border, Sunday, according to WAFA correspondence.
Forces stationed at the border checkpoint opened fire at the young man, injuring him, claiming that he attempted to infiltrate the site.
Israeli soldiers on Friday shot and injured two young Palestinian men inside their Silwad home, east of Ramallah, say Ma'an eyewtiness sources.
One of the two men was shot several times in his foot, while the other was hit by shrapnel from the gunfire.
The victims were identified only as members of the al-Nahl family, according to Ma'an. The house was stormed by Israeli soldiers during the course of a raid on the entire village.
The shooting occurred following fierce clashes which ensued between soldiers and local youth protesting against the Israeli occupation and in solidarity with the victims of the Gaza Strip.
Numerous bystanders and local residents in side their homes, including elderly and children suffered the effects of tear gas, which locals say Israeli soldiers used excessively and indiscriminately, in addition to the usual firing of concussion grenades and rubber-coated metal bullets.
The Israeli navy continues to breach the soon-to-expire temporary ceasefire by shooting at Palestinian fishing boats off the coasts of the Strip, while violent clashes between Israeli forces and angry Palestinians are ongoing in the West Bank, occupied East Jerusalem and the pre-1948 territories.

The number of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since July 7 has jumped to 2,016, a Palestinian Health Ministry official said Sunday. "Rescue teams have unearthed the body of a man from under the rubble in the eastern Gaza City residential neighborhood of Shujaya," Ashraf al-Qodra told Anadolu Agency.
"The Health Ministry has also registered the names of slain victims who had not been registered before," he added.
Many families buried their dead relatives during the Israeli offensive, which began on July 7, without registering them or obtaining death certificates, given the difficulties entailed in reaching hospitals at the time, al-Qodra explained.
He put the total death toll now at 2,016 Palestinians, including 541 children, 250 women and 95 elderly Palestinians.
The health spokesman added that 10,193 other Palestinians - including 3,084 children, 1,970 women and 368 elderly people – were also injured in the Israeli attacks.
Palestinian and Israeli negotiating teams arrived earlier Sunday in Cairo to resume indirect talks as the Egyptian-brokered five-day truce entered its fourth day.
The Palestinians are demanding, among other things, an end to the Israeli aggression, the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and a total lifting of the blockade imposed by Israel since 2007.

eli onslaught, was released by the United Nations on Sunday, using satellite footage. The Atlas comprises 108 pages of printable A3-size charts outlining satellite records of all neighborhoods of the Gaza Strip, all mapped out on a super fine resolution satellite image captured on July 6, 2014.
The small red spots represent locations that were damaged during the offensive, while a red explosion spot marks the damages caused to hospitals and power plants.
The satellite prints clearly plot the massive destruction to neighborhoods like Shujaiya, al-Zaitoun, and al-Tufah, some of the most targeted areas hit during the Israeli offensive.
The UN's Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which issued the atlas, said the damage review was founded on analysis of satellite photos starting on August 1 and the previous month.
A statement released along with the document said it was a key tool to help humanitarian organizations working in or for besieged Gaza.

It will take whole months to fix the damage to the infrastructure of besieged Gaza caused by the Israeli offensive, United Nations humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said Sunday during a visit to Iran. "Damage to hospitals, schools and UNRWA shelters, where displaced people sought refuge, will take months to repair," Amos said during a visit she paid to Tehran.
"The UN intervention continues, including deliveries of food, water and consumer products. Medicines and fuel supplies are being handed over to hospitals," she added in a statement quoted by Agence France-Presse.
Amos, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief, drew attention to the “firm statements” released by United Nations concerning "the infringement of international humanitarian laws and human rights laws by all parties."
“We have all to recognize that all UN Member States have failed to reach a political solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,” she said.
In a related incident concerning the bulk of the damage inflicted by the Israeli aggression on Gaza, head of Gaza-based Federation of Industries Ala al-Haik said during a coordination meeting held with the Palestinian Minister of Economy (via video conferencing) and the Minister of Public Works, that at least 450 Palestinian factories were completely destroyed while some 500 others sustained partial damage due to the Israeli aggression on the densely-populated enclave.
A detailed report on the tragedy that rocked the Gaza Strip throughout the Israeli onslaughts and the damage caused to its infrastructure and basic facilities was released following the meeting.
According to al-Haik the factories and industrial materials destroyed by Israel’s “war machinery” represented the backbone of the Palestinian national economy and the sole source of income for thousands of Gazan workers.
Al-Haik called for the launch of a swift-recovery-plan that embraces all factory owners and workers, particularly low-income hands, and to press ahead with the initiation of Gaza reconstruction projects.
Representatives of the Gaza private sector raised alarm bells over the damage caused to the agricultural and commercial sectors, particularly in eastern Gaza, calling on the unity government to restock the Strip with all needed energy supplies, work out the power outages, and establish a new plan that meets all of Gazans’ needs.
Participants further called for immediately putting into effect the decision of PA chief Mahmoud Abbas, declaring Gaza “a disaster zone,” so as to lift the taxes on all of the imported goods, particularly consumer products.
They further urged Palestinian ministers to pay visits to the Strip so as to be up-to-date on the current developments and alleviate Gazans’ pains.
Palestinian Minister of Economy vowed to work out all the suggested proposals and launch Gaza reconstruction projects as soon as possible, acclaiming Gazans’ steadfastness and sacrifices.

At least 111 Palestinian children were killed during the first half of August due to Israeli carnages stepped up against the besieged Gaza Strip since July 7, official Palestinian human rights data revealed. Such a rate brings the total number of Palestinian children killed since the launch of the military offensive to 534 children, including 479 below the age of 18.
Department of Child Affairs in the Palestinian Information Ministry said the Israeli occupation troops nabbed dozens of Palestinian minors from different areas while hundreds of others were wounded in a series of attacks carried out by the occupation forces and extremist settler gangs.
About 230 Palestinian children are currently locked up in Israeli jails, the same sources added.
35 Palestinian children in the West Bank sustained wounds after they were shot by the Israeli occupation forces during raids and attacks on Palestinian peaceful pro-Gaza marchers.
A number of children were left wounded as Israeli settlers deliberately ran over them.
In al-Khalil, 21 Palestinian children sustained wounds due to heavy gunfire by the invading IOF patrols against Palestinian citizens who partook in non-violent anti-Israel rallies.

UNRWA Commissioner General Pierre Krenpol urged on Sunday the international community to press ahead with the launch of an immediate investigation into the shelling of Gaza-based UN-run schools during the Israeli military offensive on the besieged enclave. Krenpol denounced during a press conference held in al-Tufah aid-distribution center, east of Gaza, the bombing of schools and their refugee civilians, who fled their targeted homes along the border areas.
This is “a scar on everybody’s face”, Krenpol declared.
More than 45 Palestinian civilians were killed while dozens sustained critical wounds in an Israeli attack on three UNRWA schools, sheltering Palestinian refugees who have been forcibly displaced from their own homes during the Israeli military operation rocking besieged Gaza since July 7.
UNRWA is currently providing assistance to around one million Palestinians in Gaza, each of which has been traumatized by the Gaza siege and the ongoing Israeli onslaughts, Krenpol pointed out.
He added that the Israeli offensive forced thousands of Palestinian civilians to depart their homes and seek shelter in UNRWA schools.
UNRWA has been sheltering around 200,000 Palestinians in its schools and relief agencies and providing some 300,000 others with aid materials.
“We have seen an unprecedented sweeping destruction targeting different neighborhoods, most notably Beit Hanoun, Khuza’a, and Shujaiya, among many others.” It is high time the aggression came to an end and the reconstruction of Gaza started, he maintained.
He vowed the UNRWA will never let Palestinians down and will always stand by them, no matter the circumstances, expressing hope that a permanent ceasefire would be reached soon.
“We’ve just paid visits to the homes of 11 members of UNRWA personnel killed during the offensive. Yet we have to transmit a message of hope, love, and freedom to the Palestinian people,” he further stated.

Israel announces expansion of Gaza fishing zone as a ‘goodwill gesture’
Israel has placed 10 new Palestinian prisoners under arbitrary administrative detention, a procedure which allows the military to hold individuals indefinitely, without charge or trial and, often, under severe conditions which the rest of the prison population is not subject to.
According to the PNN, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Cub recently stated that the number of prisoners who have been placed under administrative detention, since mid-June, has increased to 288.
The ten new prisoners have been identified as:
1. Zia Faroun, 6 months
2. Hashim Humaydan, 6 months.
3. Mohammed Hassaniyeh, 6 months.
4. Mohammed Harizat, 6 months.
5. Yasser Abu Dahuk, 4 months.
6. Musab al-Nasser, 6 months.
7. Adham Ajlouni, 6 months.
8. Harbi Ajlouni, 6 months.
9. Saadi Alotrash, 6 months.
10. Sajid al-Lukta, 4 months.
Over 800,000 Palestinians, including children, have been kidnapped and imprisoned by Israel since the illegal 1967 occupation, while over 5,000 Palestinians were currently being held by Israel, as of May of this year.
In a simultaneous and ironic gesture of "good will" in compliance with Palestinian demands, the Israeli delegation to Cairo has informed the Egyptians about a decision to expand the fishing area for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to Haaretz.
After Hamas, by way of democratic election, took control of the region in 2006, Israel unilaterally reduced the fishing zone to six miles offshore. Now, they have announced their willingness to expand the zone as a "goodwill gesture".
The Israeli newspaper added that the decision aims to contribute to the improvement of negotiations, which resumed Sunday between the Palestinian and Israeli officials in Cairo.
This announcement comes amid rumors that Israel has intentions to take unilateral steps if negotiations fail. Haaretz also stated, according to the PNN, that the Israeli delegation will not compromise on issues such as the opening of an airport, which the Palestinians consider as a basic condition for a lasting truce.
The Israelis also declared their intention to respond with severity, should any rockets be fired towards Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Luisa Morgantini at weekly anti-wall and settlements protest in Bilin
France to allocate €8 million in Palestinian support
Former Vice President of the European Parliament and Italian Parliamentary Member, Luisa Morgantini, has stated that European campaigns in solidarity with the Palestinian people are increasing, particularly after the war crimes committed, by Israel, in Gaza.
The statement comes as PM Morgantini met with Deputy Minister of Local Government, Mazen Ghnaim, also head of the national committee for the commemoration of the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
According to WAFA Palestinian News & Info Agency, the national committee was formed in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution A\68\12 issued on November 26, 2013 – designated the year 2014 as a year for solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Gunaim briefed Morgantini on activities and events sponsored by the committee, as well as its interaction with the international community. Also discussed were preparations to hold an international conference for worldwide organizations working in Palestine, to be held in Palestine on November 20.
WAFA further reports that Morgantini says she will work with all Italian and European events in preparation for the conference, and that she will encourage Italian municipalities to become involved in the conference, with the intention of laying a foundation stone for sustainable solidarity with the Palestinian people.
This, she said, would compel Israel to abide by the international laws to which it is signatory.
In related news, WAFA also reports that Palestinian Minister of Finance, Shukri Bushara, has signed an agreement with the French Consul-General in Palestine, Hervé Magro, under which France will allocate €8 million in support of the Palestinian budget.

Givati Brigade
A report by the Israeli military on Sunday August 17th found that during the Israeli invasion of Gaza that began on July 8th, fifteen different incidents of ‘friendly fire’ occurred, killing 5 soldiers and wounding 23.
The report was published in the Israeli newspaper Bamahaneh, which obtained the data directly from the Israeli military.
The paper reported that several of the incidents of ‘friendly fire’ were under investigation by the Israeli military, including an incident in which a tank from the Seventh Armored Corps Brigade fired four tank shells toward another tank located to the east of them while they were advancing southward into the Gaza Strip.
The first Israeli casualty of the invasion, named by the Israeli military as ‘Operation Protective Edge’, was killed by so-called ‘friendly fire’. 20-year-old Eitan Barak was killed by tank fire, but some observers have questioned whether he was a victim of the so-called ‘Hannibal Doctrine’, in which Israeli troops allegedly shoot soldiers who are in the process of being taken prisoner.
Another incident of ‘friendly fire’ that is under investigation by the Israeli military involved Rami Kahlon, an officer who was killed when a grenade on his armored vest exploded. The army said that it’s unclear if the pin had been removed or if the grenade itself was faulty.
Israeli forces killed nearly 2,000 Palestinians in the month-long assault on the Gaza Strip, an estimate 80% of whom were civilians, according to the United Nations. Three Israeli civilians and 64 Israeli soldiers were killed in the month-long assault – most of whom were killed while actively engaged in a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
