Heavy gunfire was heard as Israeli soldiers stationed in military towers along the Gazan border opened fire on workers and bird hunters.

Palestinians regularly face live fire from Israeli forces inside and close to the "buffer zone" along the border between Gaza and Israel.
The Israeli army says the use of live fire is necessary to deter potential "security threats." However, the practice has destroyed much of both the agricultural and fishing sectors of the impoverished coastal enclave, which has been under Israeli blockade nearly nine years.

The Israeli occupation navy on Wednesday evening opened machinegun fire at Palestinian fishing boats off the coast of Gaza City.
According to eyewitnesses, Israeli gunboats randomly opened fire at fishermen and their boats and forced them to return ashore.
Israel had imposed a limit of three nautical miles for fishing in waters off the Gaza shore until August 2014 when it agreed under a ceasefire agreement, which ended a 50-day Israeli war on Gaza, to expand the fishing zone off Gaza’s coast as far as to six nautical miles and later up to 12 miles.
However, the Israeli navy still opens fire on fishing boats sailing within three and six nautical miles.

The Mezan Center for Human Rights on Tuesday raised alarm bells over the surge in Israeli attacks on Palestinian fishermen in the blockaded Gaza Strip.
The Mezan center spoke out against the murders, arbitrary arrests, attacks on fishing equipment, and mistreatment which Gaza’s fishermen have been subjected to.
The center called on the international community to urgently step in and work on halting such Israeli violations of Palestinians’ rights. A statement by the Mezan center kept record of several arrests recently carried out among Palestinian fishermen.
The most recent among these violations occurred on Monday as nine fishermen belonging to the same family were detained. He said the ongoing Israeli attacks on Palestinian fishermen and violations of their rights amounts to an infringement of international human rights and humanitarian laws.
The center said the international law binds the Israeli occupation to cease committing violations of Palestinians’ rights.
The statement called on the international community and the parties involved in the Fourth Geneva Convention to assume their ethical duties and seriously work on lifting the Gaza siege, which, itself, amounts to a war crime.

A group of Israeli farmers were fired upon by Israeli troops in the Rafah region of southern Gaza on Tuesday.
The farmers reported that Israeli troops stationed along the southern border of Gaza, where Gaza borders Egypt, began to fire live ammunition toward them as they were farming their land.
Israeli troops have, in recent years, bulldozed hundreds of homes and hundreds of acres of farmland in Rafah in order to create a “buffer zone” along the border. The Palestinians who lost their homes and livelihood received no compensation for their losses, and if they make any attempt to return to their land, they are shot at by the Israeli military.
During the past two weeks alone, Israeli troops have fired upon Palestinians in the Rafah “buffer zone” at least two dozen times, according to the United Nations.
In the shooting incident on Tuesday, no farmers were injured, but they were forced to leave the area in the middle of their planting.
