Mossad killed Iranian scientist
Mossad killed Iranian scientist
|
Israel was behind the assassination of the Iranian nuclear scientist last week in Tehran, the German Der Spiegel magazine reported.
The article claimed it was the first major operation of the new Mossad director Tamir Pardo and surveys a series of assassination attempts of Iranian nuclear scientisits in the past 18 months. The newspaper claims the victim was involved in the development of switches for a nuclear bomb and had worked in a research center in northern Tehran. It pointed out that following the scientist's death there were conflicting reports concerning his identity. Initially he was identified as Darioush Rezaei a physics professor and expert in neutron transport but later Iranian authorities identified him as |
Darioush Rezaeinejad an electronics student. The German newspaper insists the victim was Professor Rezaei who has not been seen in public since the incident.
The intelligence sources told Der Spiegel that the Israeli Air Force support launching an aerial attack on Iran's nuclear sites, a plan the Mossad opposes. As long as the Mossad is leading the campaign against the Iranian nuclear program it continues to get the big targets, the source said.

According to the Palestinian Government Media Center, there is an alarming rate of accelerated Israeli attacks on Palestinian children in the year 2011. So far this year, 9 Palestinian children have been killed by Israeli settlers and soldiers, and approximately 200 children have been injured by either the Israeli occupation forces or by Israeli settlers.
The statement claimed that “Hundreds of children are being illegally rounded up monthly by Israeli forces and detained, abused, and imprisoned without due process of law and in direct violation of international, Israeli, and Palestinian laws.” The majority of these children are abducted by the Occupation forces, without informing their parents, and are questioned by the occupation forces. The Palestinian Authority urged the UN to implement resolution 1998 which |
protects the right of children in conflict. The PA also urged non-governmental organizations to take legal action against these clear violations of international humanitarian laws.
The killing, injuring, abducting and imprisonment of Palestinian children by the Israeli occupation forces and Israeli settlers is a policy seen my many observers as targeting the future, since they believe that targeting Palestinian children is targeting the Palestinian future.
Update: 'Alarming' rise in attacks on Palestinian children
The Palestinian Authority on Sunday warned that Israel's attacks on Palestinian children were escalating at "an alarming rate" and urged the UN to step in.
Israeli soldiers and settlers have killed nine children so far in 2011, and almost 200 children have been injured by settler violence and the Israeli military, a statement by the Government Media Center said.
"Hundreds of children are being illegally rounded up monthly by Israeli forces and detained, abused, and imprisoned without due process of law and in direct violation of international, Israeli, and Palestinian laws," the PA added.
The statement referred to a recent event caught on camera in which young Palestinians were kidnapped by masked, armed Israeli forces while playing football.
One of the children in the video, 13-year-old Islam Jaber, was taken to a graveyard and beaten up, the PA said, adding that he suffered severe anxiety attacks since the incident.

The PA said Israel attempted to bypass humanitarian law by applying "military orders" against Palestinians. The government urged the UN to implement resolution 1998 which protects the right of children in conflict.
The resolution notes that "certain parties persist in committing violations and abuses against children and expresses its readiness to adopt targeted and graduated measures against persistent perpetrators." The PA urged the UN and non-governmental organizations to take legal action and end Israel's impunity, noting that Israel had been violating and abusing Palestinian children "for decades now." http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=410191 |

EU urges inquiry into killings in West Bank refugee camp
The European Union on Tuesday urged Israel to carry out an inquiry into the killing of two Palestinians by Israeli soldiers in the Qalandiya refugee camp in the West Bank.
"The European Union is saddened and concerned by the killing," said a spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.
"We call on the Israeli authorities to exercise restraint and thoroughly investigate the incident," added spokesman Michael Mann.
UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Robert Serry also urged Israel to investigate.
The Israeli army said an inquiry was already under way.
"The military police has opened an investigation regarding the issue, and upon its conclusion will pass its findings to the military advocate general for review," it said in a written response to an AFP query.
The incident took place after soldiers entered the camp before dawn on Monday and clashes broke out, Palestinian officials said.
"Residents of Qalandiya camp were preparing themselves for the first day of Ramadan and going to the dawn prayers, when they were met by Israeli forces which violently stormed the camp to conduct illegal arrests and kidnapping of residents," the Palestinian Government Media Center said.
Palestinian presidency spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina condemned the killings in a statement to government news agency WAFA, calling them "an Israeli attempt to escalate the situation before September."
The Palestinians plan to approach the United Nations in September for membership for a Palestinian state on the lines that existed before the 1967 Six Day War, a move strongly opposed by Israel.

PA cabinet condemns killing of 2 Palestinians
The Palestinian Authority cabinet on Tuesday condemned the killing of two Palestinians by Israeli soldiers in a refugee camp near Ramallah.
Israeli forces shot dead two Palestinians during a raid on Qalandiya refugee camp before dawn on Monday in what the Israeli army said was a "routine arrest procedure."
The cabinet said the killings were another "link in the chain" of Israeli crimes against Palestinians, in a statement following the weekly meeting in Ramallah.
PA ministers agreed that the international community should intervene and protect Palestinians from Israeli attacks, noting that Israeli settlers torched 150 dunums of Palestinian land in Jaloud south of Nablus last week.
Ministers said that despite financial difficulties, the government had managed to pay employees' salaries for July. They expressed hope that Arab states would deliver on their pledges to cover the PA's financial deficit.
The cabinet approved a bilateral agreement signed with Russia for cultural cooperation, and ministers congratulated the Palestinian people on the holy month of Ramadan.

Hamas condemns Kalandia killings
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri has condemned the Israeli occupation forces raid in Kalandia near Ramallah that killed two young Palestinian men.
Clashes broke out there after the IOF came in to make arrests. The army said the young men were killed by ''uncontrolled'' gunfire.
Abu Zuhri said the lethal raid calls for increased resistance in the West Bank and called on the Palestinian Authority security agencies to stop persecuting resistance forces and confiscating their weapons.
The fact that the attack took place on Monday the first day of the holy month of Ramadan demonstrates Israel's ''aggressive nature'' that lacks respect for the sanctities and setiments of the Muslims, Abu Zuhri pointed out.
In a separate statement, Hamas MPs in the West Bank also condemned the killings as a ''heinous crime''.
The MPs mourned the martyrs; Mutasim Adwan and Ali Khalifa'.
The statement is concluded with calls to the Palestinian factions to work to reconcile and achieve unity at the soonest time possible, saying national unity is the best response against Israel's continued attacks

Raed al-Maghazi 33
A Gaza man passed away on Monday night after the Israeli occupation authorities denied him entry into the West Bank to receive treatment for a fatal illness, Al-Mizan human rights center in Gaza said in a press release.
The deceased, Raed al-Maghazi, 33, from Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza Strip, was the third Gazan to have died in Israeli travel restrictions this year.
Maghazi suffered a chronic heart condition caused by lack of blood flow to it and could not find the proper treatment in the Strip, which has been crippled by a five-year Israeli blockade.
He was denied the right to travel to the West Bank with or without an escort after the Palestinian coordination office notified the occupation authorities of his dire circumstances.
He died during an operation in the Gaza Strip on Monday after his health took a turn for the worse last Sunday.

Reuters aired his final footage which can be seen here. Viewer discretion is advised.
A tribute to Fadel Shana’a, Reuters journalist 1984/85 to 2008 Fadel Shana’a was only 23 years old when his body was pierced by metal darts. Working for Reuters as a cameraman, Fadel ‘s enthusiasm, bravery, and dedication to a life of honest reporting compelled him to be at the scene of an attack even as it unfolded. The footage he captured validated the use of the terms “violent” and “systematic” when describing Israel’s occupation, specifically his final seconds of footage. On 16 April 2008, Fadel and an accompanying Reuters soundman made their way to the site of an ongoing tank shelling. Standing alongside a silver |
Mitsubishi SUV labeled in bright red with the words “Press” and “TV”, Fadel focused his camera lens on an Israeli tank in the distance. As he slowly zoomed out, the tank fired a flechette shell that within moments hit near his location. This was the second time he was targeted by Israeli troops. The first was in a 2006 air strike that left him bleeding but alive.
This time, unfortunately, Fadel was not so lucky. The impact of the tank missile threw the camera to the ground and blacked the screen. High velocity shrapnel tore Fadel’s body into pieces. He died at the scene while his soundman survived with severe injuries. Two passing men were also killed by the attack. (His final footage can be found at the end of this article.)
A second shell hit the Reuters SUV, destroying it completely, killing three more, including two children, and injuring twelve others.
Reuters demanded an investigation into the death of one of the agency’s best journalists in the Gaza Strip. Four months later, the Israeli military closed the investigation without taking any disciplinary measures. The tank crew faced no repercussions for its actions even though the attack was captured on film.
According to comments and a letter sent to Reuters by the Israeli military, the tripod Fadel was using for his video camera bore a resemblance to weapons that could have been used against Israeli troops. The attack was therefore justified, said the letter. Fadel was one of at least ten journalists killed by Israeli forces in the years between 2000 and 2008.
A marble monument guarded by a small fence stands in front of Gaza City’s main media and press building. It stands as a reminder of the sacrifices Fadel made in order to present to the public the reality of occupation and war.
As for me, Fadel is the inspiration that motivates whatever passion for journalism I might have. I try to view journalism as an enormous and complex attempt at storytelling, one that involves courage and moral refinement, and the stories that Fadel shared with us are the ones that we must never forget. He was a messenger, his camera was his pen, and he captured the reality that still today threatens the Palestinian identity. He has given us a visual reference to model our work after, and as long as we maintain his poise and dedication, his death will not have been in vain. Reportage has never been so urgent.

Walid Shaath, 45
The Palestinian Prisoners Study Center said Sunday that released prisoner Walid Shaath from Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip died after a stroke, only seven months since his release.
Shaath was arrested in 1993 and sentenced to 18 years that he fully served in Israeli prisons.
The Palestinian Prisoners Study Center called for an opening of the issue of prisoners’ medical treatment in Israeli prisons, after the rising number of fatalities among Palestinian prisoners due to chronic diseases.
The Center warned of Israeli policies of medical neglect and delays in treatment, whose price is paid by Palestinian prisoners immediately after their release, adding that these policies are among the leading causes of death of these prisoners.
It stressed the importance of visiting prisoners, reviewing their situation and allowing medical teams to perform surgeries for those in need.
The Center also called for the formation of a committee to investigate the deaths of Palestinians in Israeli prisons and after their release, and prevent the occurrence of this systematic phenomenon.

Palestinian prisoner deprived of necessary operation
The Israeli Negev prison has been stalling to provide Palestinian prisoner Mahmoud Hamdi Shabbana, 38, from Al-Khalil city, with a necessary surgery on his vocal cords, prisoners said, as medical neglect stalks Palestinian prisoners in Israel's prisons.
Shabbana, who is currently being held without an indictment and previously spent 18 years in Israeli custody, has been diagnosed with a torn vocal cord and has lost the ability to speak for more than a month. Recently, deposits have appeared on his vocal cords.
A prison doctor diagnosed him at first and said he was in need of an emergency surgical operation but said he had to wait his turn.
On Sunday, a former prisoner in Israeli prisons Waleed Shaath, from Khan Younis, died after suffering a stroke just seven months after he was released from Israeli custody.
Sources told a PIC correspondent that Shaath's death was due to medical neglect that mounted as he served an eighteen-year sentence in full.

IOF soldiers shoot university student, leave him bleed to death

Ibrahim Omae Sarhan 19
A 19-year-old Palestinian university student was killed at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) which stormed Fara’a refugee camp north of Nablus in a pre dawn raid on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses told the PIC reporter in Nablus that the IOF soldiers in 11 armored vehicles stormed the camp at 0300 am and one of them fired at Ibrahim Sarhan while on his way to offer dawn prayers.
The shot hit a main artery in his right thigh, the witnesses said, adding that Sarhan tried to reach a nearby house but the soldiers dragged him away and prevented anyone from extending help to him even the ambulance crews and left him bleed to death.
Violent confrontation then took place between citizens and the IOF soldiers, who broke into many homes and destroyed belongings and arrested a number of citizens then released some of them and retained two in custody, the witnesses said.
The Israeli Military Conducts Investigation On Killing Of Ibrahim Sarhan
The Israeli military will be investigating the killing of 21 year old Ibrahim Omae Sarhan on Wednesday July 13, 2011, for alleged wrongdoings. Israeli military sources said that an investigation does not mean the Israeli military were violating the operations rules of engagement, according to the Jerusalem Post.
According to the Jerusalem Post, an Israeli Military spokesman stressed that the soldiers acted “appropriately” since the young “man jumped out of a window during an arrest raid and tried to flee.”
The twenty-one year old Ibrahim was on his way to mosque when Israeli forces raided his residence at Al-Faraa refugee camp at 3:30 AM July 13, 2011. The college student ran once he saw the Israeli forces enter his camp and was shot in both legs while doing so.
After being shot in both legs, Ibrahim managed to flee to a nearby house, whose residents called an ambulance.
The Israeli military followed Ibrahim’s blood trail to the house he was residing at and detained him until he bled to death according to the Palestinian Solidarity Organization.
Major General Avichai Mandelblit announced in April that the Israeli Military would launch a new policy where immediate investigations would take place on killings of unarmed Palestinian civilians not suspected in terrorist activities.
The new MAG policy differs from the policy of investigation set in place in 2000, where investigations could only be done after operational probes, lead by field commanders, were accused on wrongdoings.
This policy does not apply when there is an exchange of fire. Consequently, this policy does not apply to unarmed Palestinian civilians of the Gaza Strip.
The new policy of investigating killings of unarmed Palestinians took into effect in order to minimize criticism of the Israeli Military.
If a violent conflict were to arise in the West Bank, the General Mandelbilt reserves the right to reverse his decision.

Witnesses recount deadly West Bank raid
A Palestinian student who died Wednesday in the occupied West Bank was shot before being arrested by Israeli soldiers, witnesses in the refugee camp said.
Ibrahim Sarhan was already bleeding profusely as soldiers surrounded a house in Al-Farah camp, refusing to allow ambulances to approach the area, witnesses told Ma'an.
"Me and Ibrahim finished dawn prayers and were walking home. After I arrived Ibrahim continued but moments later, I heard gunshots and loud shouting," said Abed As-Salam Al-Aydi, 48, a resident of the camp.
"He was saying, 'Help me, help me,' and managed to reach one of the neighbors who offered first aid," Al-Aydi told Ma'an. "But the soldiers raided the home and arrested Ibrahim, leaving him bleeding to death."
Red Crescent official Adnan Al-Ghunaimi said "a long time" passed until medics were allowed access.
"We received Ibrahim from the Israeli army a long time after he sustained wounds to the thigh. The shooting severed a major artery, causing massive bleeding," the medical official told Ma'an.
"We tried to offer him treatment but he died shortly after arriving to Rafidia hospital," Al-Ghunaimi said.
Army officials have said an explosive device was hurled at troops who were in the area with the intention to arrest Sarhan and others. They say soldiers opened fire when Sarhan attempted to evade arrest.
"The soldiers followed standard procedure and fired at his lower body," an army spokeswoman said. The soldiers first warned him verbally to surrender but opened fire because he refused, she said.
"An IDF soldier treated him on the spot immediately," the official told Ma'an.
The army says seven people were arrested during the arrest raid.
Three of them were identified as Hakam Jamil, 27, Samir Al-Khatib, 22, and Mohammad Hassan Abu Al-Jawwad, 21.
Ahmad Nashaat Abu Al-Hassan, 17, sustained bruises after being beaten by the soldiers.
It was not clear why the army intended to arrest Sarhan.
His mother, Um Muhammad, says she was stunned when she heard the news from neighbors who flocked to her home to express condolences shortly after the student was pronounced dead.
"Oh God, my son was not wanted [by Israel], he was never arrested even once," she said.
Sarhan was close to graduating from the faculty of engineering at An-Najah University, where he supported the Islamic bloc in student senate elections, the Hamas party announced Wednesday.
In a statement, Hamas said Sarhan was shot while en route to morning prayers.
"The Israeli army arrested Sarhan after wounding him ... [Soldiers] detained him inside a home in the camp, while he was bleeding, and intentionally delayed handing him over to the Palestinian ambulance," the party said.

Hamas mourns martyr, IOF arrests 8 citizens including boy
Hamas issued a statement in the West Bank on Wednesday mourning the death of Ibrahim Sarhan at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces in a pre dawn raid today.
It said that Sarhan, 19, was captured after he was shot and wounded by the IOF special force in Fara’a refugee camp north of Nablus and held in one of the houses. It added that the soldiers deliberately delayed handing him over to the Palestinian medics, which led to his death.
The IOF forces arrested three Palestinians in the refugee camp in a campaign of arrests during which Sarhan was killed. In one of the houses they did not find the young man they wanted to detain so they took his brother and cousin in his place, locals told the PIC.
Five other Palestinians were detained in Al-Khalil villages of Samu, Dura, and Beit Ummar, local sources said, adding that three were arrested in Beit Ummar including a 16-year-old boy and a sick teen who was beaten along with his father and mother in front of the family members.
