United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said before the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council held today to discuss the current escalations and developments in the occupied Palestinian territory, that he was appalled by the increasingly large numbers of Palestinian civilian casualties, including many women and children, from Israeli strikes on Gaza.
Following is the full statement of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres:
I thank the Chinese presidency for organizing this open meeting.
We meet today amid the most serious escalation in Gaza and Israel in years.
The current hostilities are utterly appalling. This latest round of violence only perpetuates the cycles of death, destruction and despair, and pushes farther to the horizon any hopes of coexistence and peace.
Fighting must stop. It must stop immediately. Rockets and mortars on one side and aerial and artillery bombardments on the other must stop. I appeal to all parties to heed this call.
The United Nations is actively engaging all sides towards an immediate ceasefire.
The hostilities have already caused unconscionable death, immense suffering and damage to vital infrastructure. I am appalled by the increasingly large numbers of Palestinian civilian casualties, including many women and children, from Israeli strikes in Gaza. I also deplore Israeli fatalities from rockets launched from Gaza.
I am also deeply concerned by violent clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians across the occupied West Bank, including east Jerusalem, where some Palestinian families are under threat of eviction.
In Israel, violence by vigilante-style groups and mobs has added a further horrendous dimension to an already deteriorating crisis. Leaders on all sides have a responsibility to curb inflammatory rhetoric and calm the rising tensions.
The fighting risks dragging Israelis and Palestinians into a spiral of violence with devastating consequences for both communities and for the entire region.
It has the potential to unleash an uncontainable security and humanitarian crisis and to further foster extremism, not only in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel, but in the region as a whole, potentially creating a new locus of dangerous instability.
The hostilities have forced thousands of Palestinians to leave their homes in Gaza and shelter in schools, mosques and other places with limited access to water, food, hygiene or health services. Hospitals are already overstretched due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Israeli civilians live in fear of rockets launched from Gaza.
I am appalled by the attack on a refugee camp in Gaza, in which 10 members of one family were killed. Humanitarian installations must be protected.
Journalists must be allowed to work free of fear and harassment. The destruction of media offices in Gaza is extremely concerning.
This senseless cycle of bloodshed, terror and destruction must stop immediately.
All parties must respect international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
The status quo at the holy sites must be upheld and respected.
My Special Coordinator will brief you today on the latest developments on the ground and our efforts to de-escalate the situation.
Let me reiterate that the United Nations remains deeply committed to working with Israelis and Palestinians and with our international and regional partners, including the Middle East Quartet, to realize a lasting and just peace.
We are in contact with many relevant interlocuters and I again call on the parties to allow mediation efforts to intensify and succeed.
The only way forward is to return to negotiations with the goal of a two-States solution, with two States living side-by-side in peace, security and mutual recognition, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states, based on relevant UN resolutions, international law and prior agreements.
The longer this cycle of violence continues, the more challenging it will be to reach that ultimate goal.
Only a negotiated sustainable political solution will end, once and for all, these devastating cycles of violence and lead to a peaceful future for Palestinians and Israelis alike.
I thank you.

The Israeli Airforce carried out, Sunday evening, dozens of airstrikes targeting many parts of the Gaza Strip, killing at least three Palestinians, and wounding dozens, in Beit Hanoun, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. video
Medical sources said the missiles killed three young Palestinian men, identified as Moath Nabil Za’anin, Mohammad Awni Za’anin, and Mohammad Yousef al-Kafarna. Moath is a soccer player in Beit Hanoun, and Jabalia refugee camp.
They added that many Palestinians were injured, some seriously, and were rushed to medical centers.
Rescue teams are still looking for more victims, believed to be buried under the rubble of bombarded buildings.
The Health Ministry in Gaza said the Palestinians were killed during search and rescue efforts, trying to find more Palestinians under the rubble, when the army targeted the same area again. video
It is worth mentioning that a Palestinian from the al-Qadi family, in the northwestern part of Beit Hanoun, was also killed in Israeli strikes.
The Israeli army also fired a missile into a four-story home, owned by the Affana family, in Sheikh Radwan, in Gaza, and destroyed it, in addition to targeting another home for the al-Ashraf family. video
In an update, published approximately at 6 in the evening, Palestine time, and before the recent strikes, the Health Ministry in Gaza said the number of slain Palestinians was at least 192, including 58 children and 34 women, and added that 1235 have been injured.
The Ministry also said search and rescue operations are ongoing, as numerous Palestinians are still buried under the rubble which, many believed to be dead.

A spokesman for the Hamas Movement in Occupied Jerusalem has urged the Palestinian masses to use all available means to spread the flame of confrontation with the Israeli occupation state across Palestine.
In press remarks on Sunday, Hamas spokesman Mohamed Hamadah called on the Palestinians in the holy city, the West Bank and the 1948 occupied lands (PIC) to keep confronting the Israeli occupation state, its forces and settlers in all flashpoint areas.
Spokesman Hamadah also urged the Palestinian Authority security men and everyone who owns a weapon to rise up against the occupation. “This is the time for victory, so write for yourself a bright chapter in the battle: “Sword of Jerusalem.”

Regrettably, simply because of the obstruction by one country, the Security Council hasn’t been able to speak with one voice.”
UN Reporter Ryan Heath reported, “After 2 hours of briefing and speeches it’s the US vs everyone else, on whether UN should call for immediate deescalation”.
14 out of 15 Security Council members were in favor of the statement. Only the US was opposed. And since the US has ‘veto power’ at the UN Security Council, they were able to block the resolution.
The U.S. also blocked a similar resolution this past Monday, May 10th, the day that the escalation began.
In addition to China, other Security Council members, including Ireland, Norway, and Mexico, emphasized that the call for a ceasefire is an urgent issue.
A former US deputy national security adviser during the Obama administration, Ben Rhodes, tweeted on Sunday that it “feels increasingly untenable for the U.S. to see this loss of civilian life in Gaza — including so many children — and not publicly call for a cease-fire.”
Meanwhile, the Israeli Cabinet met Sunday at noon to discuss their military’s attack on Gaza, which they apparently plan to continue without pause. Palestinian, Egyptian and Qatari calls for a ceasefire have been met by flat silence from the Israeli leadership.
Instead, the Israeli government has stated it plans to continue to bomb what it calls “Hamas targets”, despite the fact that human rights organizations monitoring the situation have documented that the targets are in fact civilian targets with no ‘military’ component.

The latest Israeli airstrikes, in addition to those carried out over the past five days, have caused significant damage to infrastructure, including electricity networks and roads, cutting the geographic connection between major neighborhoods in the coastal enclave.
Entire buildings, homes, and apartments were leveled to the ground by Israeli warplanes and artillery during the ongoing Israeli aggression which mainly targets the civil population.
