in over a year.
It claims to have fired 120 projectiles at Israeli military sites around Gaza before agreeing to an Egypt-brokered truce on Wednesday night. Hamas leader Ayman Taha told Ma'an that the party wanted a truce to avoid Israeli attacks against Palestinians but added "aggression cannot pass without punishment." "The Al-Qassam Brigades did not put its weapons down and it is there in the field and will respond to any Israeli aggression at the appropriate place and time," Taha said. Hamas usually holds its fire under an unofficial truce with Israel, and discourages smaller militant groups from firing at Israel. |

Another Palestinian has been killed in a fresh Israeli airstrike in the east of the Gaza Strip, bringing to nine the number of Palestinians killed over the past three days.
Also earlier on Wednesady, an Israeli warplane targeted a Palestinian man, riding on a motorcycle, in southern Gaza 's Rafah on the border with Egypt, medics said, adding another person was also wounded.
Nine Palestinians, including two teenagers, have so far been killed and five others injured in a series of airstrikes carried out by Israeli warplanes against the 1.6 million people living in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli regime’s military frequently bombs the Gaza Strip, claiming the actions are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used, in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.
Gaza has been blockaded since 2007, causing a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.
Last week, fifty international aid groups and UN agencies urged the Israeli regime to open borders of Gaza, saying the blockade has harmed Gazans.

Israel killed a man in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday, as a surge of fighting across the border of the Palestinian enclave entered a third day despite what Egypt said were its efforts to broker a truce. Palestinian medics said the remains of Ghalib Irmeilat, 21, were taken to hospital, and another person was seriously wounded in an airstrike on their motorcycle in southern Rafah, near Gaza's frontier with the Egyptian Sinai. Israel said Irmeilat was a "Global Jihad terror operative" who was involved in a raid on Monday from adjacent Sinai territory on the Israeli border, which killed a Palestinian citizen of Israel. Soldiers shot dead two attackers, who were later claimed by a newly |
formed radical Islamist movement, the "Shura Council of Mujahideen in the Holy Land".
Palestinians fired at least 16 rockets into Israel on Wednesday, causing no casualties, the military said.
Fighters from Gaza's ruling Hamas movement have joined in the barrages after months of staying on the sidelines, a shift that holds the prospect of a wider conflict during the contested ascendancy for political Islam in Egypt.
Israeli airstrikes killed four men in northern Gaza on Monday and two teenagers were killed by Israeli shelling on Tuesday morning.
Cairo has brokered Gaza truces in the past and an Egyptian official said renewed mediation had secured agreement by Israel and Palestinian factions on Tuesday night.
A Palestinian source accused the Israelis of violating the deal. Israel neither confirmed nor denied there was such deal, and the military said in a statement it would "continue to operate with perseverance and determination against those who use terror against the State of Israel."
Egyptian ambassador to the Palestinian Authority Yasser Othman told Ma'an on Wednesday Egypt was in touch with all parties in order to restore calm.

Israeli air strikes have killed six Palestinians in Gaza during the past 24 hours following an attack on an Israeli border fence construction site that left one worker dead, medical officials in Gaza said Tuesday.
Violence appeared to be escalating between the two sides as the armed wing of Hamas said it had shelled an Israeli base Tuesday. Four Palestinians were killed in Beit Hanoun, a city in northern Gaza, and two more early Tuesday east of central Gaza City, the medical officials said. A spokesman for the Israeli Defense Force said Tuesday that the Israel Air Force had carried out a strike around midnight on a group of men he said were laying explosives near the security fence in central Gaza. On Monday, the IDF said the air force had scored a direct hit on "a terrorist squad attempting to fire a rocket at Israel from the northern Gaza Strip." Meanwhile, the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said Tuesday it had shelled an Israeli military base near the border with Gaza. The group said in a statement that the attack was in response to the death of one of its members in the air strike on Beit Hanoun. The IDF spokesman said three rockets had landed inside Israel on Tuesday, but he could not confirm whether they hit an army base. |

On 18 June 2012, a 17-year-old boy and his 19-year-old friend are killed as they walk towards the border fence between Gaza and Israel.
On 18 June 2012, M.O. met his friends Mohammad and Yousif at a cafeteria to watch a football game. “Yousif started talking about a friend of his who sneaked into Israel through the border fence and found a good job,” remembers M.O. “I really wanted to sneak into Israel to find a job. Yousif suggested we go to the border fence east of the camp and check things out. We agreed to jump the fence if things were calm,” continues M.O.
At around 11:00 pm, the three boys decided to walk towards the border. “We arrived about an hour later and stood on a high hill overlooking the border fence. We saw two Israeli jeeps patrolling the border. We were about 150 metres away. Once the two jeeps went away, the three of us started approaching the border. I was behind Yousif and Mohammad because I was really scared and hesitant,” says M.O.
When the three boys were about 15 meters from the border gunfire erupted. “An intense shootout began with shots coming from all directions. I could not figure out which way it was coming from because it was too dark. The number of shots was overwhelming. ‘Get down,’ Yousif shouted. I got down and saw Yousif and Mohammad lying down on the ground about six metres in front of me. The shooting lasted for about five minutes and remained very intense. Then, I heard an explosion in front of Yousif and Mohammad. I was so scared I buried my face in the ground so no one would see me,” M.O. recalls.
“A second huge explosion hit the area behind me and I felt something hit my left foot,” he continues. After a third and fourth explosion, M.O. had no choice but to try and crawl to safety. “I crawled for about 150 meters and reached some houses near the border. [...] I tried to walk but my left foot was hurting me a lot.”
After staying hidden until around 4:30 am, M.O. made his way back to the camp and was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for shrapnel wounds to his left food. “When I got home, I was told that both my friends had been killed in the incident. Their bodies were found dismembered.”

The Israeli Air Force has killed four Palestinians in Gaza, who they allege were Islamic Jihad militants. This follows a skirmish between Israeli forces and militants from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
Two Palestinians were killed while riding their motorcycle near the town of Beit Hanoun, according to Palestinian medical officials. The Israeli Defense Force claims the men were members of a terror cell responsible for recent shooting attacks along the border.
In a later strike, the Israeli military killed two more Palestinians in northern Gaza. Israeli authorities say the men were preparing a rocket strike in Israel and were also members of Islamic Jihad. Palestinian sources also say seven people were wounded by the strikes.
The Israeli military also said that a third strike against an alleged terror cell that was in the process of planting an explosive device on the country’s border with central Gaza was conducted, the Jerusalem Post reports. No casualties have been reported, though the Israeli Air Force confirmed that its third strike scored a direct hit on the target.
The strikes follow a clash between the Israeli military and three militants who attacked Israeli workers on the country’s border with Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, killing one of them. The Israeli military then rushed to the scene and killed two of the militants, though the third one reportedly escaped.
The latest strike followed reports of missile attacks on the Israeli town of Sderot, as well as on the Ashkelon area.
Israel has been increasingly concerned with Egypt’s ability to maintain control and ensure security in the Sinai Peninsula, especially since the downfall of President Hosni Mubarak and the ensuing internal turmoil.
“We can see a disturbing deterioration in Egypt's control of Sinai's security,” noted Israeli defense minister, Ehud Barak, as quoted by Reuters.
The latest infiltration was also allegedly sparked by the Muslim Brotherhood’s declared victory in the presidential elections.
Israel is currently constructing a fence stretching from Gaza to the city of Eilat in the south of the country to halt a massive influx of immigrants from Africa and to ensure security.

Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman has asked for a medal of honor to be awarded to the Israeli truck driver who killed two Palestinians a couple of days earlier.
Lieberman, during a session for the Yisrael Beiteinu parliamentary bloc, said that the truck driver prevented a repeat of the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
Commenting on PA chief Mahmoud Abbas’s description of the incident as cold-blooded murder, the foreign minister said that the statement reflected Abbas’s intentions, adding that there would be no breakthrough in the peace process as long as Abbas remained in power.
