Council for European Palestinian Relations (CEPR), in partnership with the Euro-Palestine Working Group, organized conference to commemorate the Nakba 65th anniversary and discuss how Palestinians are still affected by displacement in 1948. The Conference, which was attended by dozens of MPs and their assistants, discussed the historical dimension to the Palestinian Nakba, along with a number of other Palestinian issues.
Among the issues discussed by the Conference are right of return for refugees, the abuses and discrimination against the Arab citizens inside the occupied territories and the conditions of Palestinian refugees.
The conference was held under the management of MEP and head of the Euro-Palestine Group David Martin and the member of the Belgian Parliament Sabine Vermeulen, with the participation of the Director of the CEPR Arafat Madi and Palestinian historian Salman Abu Sitta.
Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the EP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia Evo Figel and MEP Ms. Alexandra Thein participated in the discussions.
MEP Martin talked about some Israeli offenses that accompanied the displacement of Palestinians from their lands, while MP Sabine expressed shock by the Israeli authorities' abuses against Palestinians in the 1948-territories, and by the demolition of houses and the deprivation of the most basic citizenship rights.
For his part, Madi reviewed a series of laws of Racial Discrimination legislated by Israel against the Palestinians in the occupied territories over the past years, to seize lands of refugees and displaced Palestinians.
He also warned of the Israeli serious schemes, latest of which was the Praver/ Begin Plan, under which Israel will confiscate about 800 thousand dunums and displace about 30 thousand Arab citizens who live in these lands.

Dr. Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, has lashed out at PA chief Mahmoud Abbas for failing to mention the Nakba at an international conference in Jordan earlier Saturday. Abu Zuhri told the PIC that his movement was frustrated at the fact that Abbas only mentioned the 1967 occupied lands without mentioning the Nakba, the usurpation of Palestine.
The speech reflected an absolute indifference to our people’s historical right to their land, Abu Zuhri said, adding that it also transgressed on the Palestinian right of return to their land from which they were forcibly evicted in 1948.
Abbas, who disregarded any talk about the Nakba despite its anniversary, was addressing the international economic forum held at the Dead Sea in Jordan.

Israeli archive file shows that Israel's founder tried to erase Palestinian Nakba
Palestinian refugees in tents 1948
A new report published in the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz describes the information found in a newly-uncovered document in the government archives, which reveals that the first Israeli government, including the first Prime Minister David Ben Gurion, worked to re-write the history of Israel's founding in 1948 to deny the fact that over 750,000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled.
The file, number GL-18/17028, was apparently missed by the Israeli military censor, who has sealed all other historical documents related to Israel's creation in 1948. With the advent of historians like Benny Morris, who went through previously de-classified documents in detail and found strong evidence of massacres of Palestinians by Israeli armed militias as well as the forced expulsion of most of the indigenous population of Palestine in 1948, documents that had been de-classified were sealed again and remain so until today.
There are currently no guidelines or timeline as to when the documents will be unsealed. However, the one file that the government censor missed has a great deal within it on the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe), the 65th anniversary of which was marked by Palestinians and their supporters just this past Wednesday.
According to the Ha'aretz expose, “what has been uncovered provides enough information to establish that in many cases senior commanders of the Israel Defense Forces ordered Palestinians to be expelled and their homes blown up. The Israeli military not only updated Ben-Gurion about these events but also apparently received his prior authorization, in written or oral form, notably in Lod and Ramle, and in several villages in the north.”
The file also contains information on the Israeli hasbara (propaganda) campaign that was launched after the expulsion of the Palestinians, to try to re-write what happened and deny that the Palestinian people were forcibly expelled. The Ha'aretz expose says that in the early 1960s, under pressure from the Kennedy administration in the U.S. to address the crisis of the Palestinian refugees, Ben Gurion held a special meeting at the U.N.
According to the authors, “Ben-Gurion was convinced that the refugee problem was primarily one of public image (hasbara). Israel, he believed, would be able to persuade the international community that the refugees had not been expelled, but had fled.”
One of the lies promoted in the propaganda campaign of the early 1960s was a claim that Arab and Palestinian leaders encouraged the Palestinian people to flee during the 1948 Nakba. But the evidence contained in the one unclassified file does not support that claim. Instead, it was the massacres by Israeli militias in places like Deir Yassin, in which over one hundred men, women and children were lined up and shot, that made so many Palestinians fear for their lives and flee.
The rest of the documents on the subject, including government reports and military narratives, remain classified. Many of the original documents have also been destroyed by the Israeli government, some of which (according to researchers who read them) contained accounts of massacres, rapes, brutality and excessive violence that would have been embarrassing to the Israeli state, as well as calling into question the narrative that the Israeli government promotes and the history it teaches its children.

Video: Palestinian group claims Golan attack
The Abdul Qader al-Husseini brigades on Thursday claimed responsibility for an attack from Syria on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The military wing of the Free Palestine Movement said it had received permission from Syria to launch the attack, following recent Israeli attacks on Syria. The brigades said in a statement that militants fired projectiles at dawn on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the Nakba -- or catastrophe -- of Israel's founding in 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced or fled from their homes. "We are avenging all our martyrs that we lost in our war with the Zionist enemy," the brigades said in a statement. The group posted a video online showing what it says is footage of the attack. |
Ma'an is unable to verify the content of the footage.
Israel's military said several rockets fired from Syria landed in the occupied Golan Heights on Wednesday.
"Around 6 a.m. several rockets landed in the Hermon area on the Syria-Israel border," an Israeli army spokeswoman told Ma'an.
"As a result, the site has been closed to visitors and Israel has registered a complaint with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force. The incident is most likely related to the internal conflict," she added.
No injuries or damage were reported.
Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said last week that Israel was not getting involved in Syria's internal conflict. It has, however, carried out several targeted strikes in Syria.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in a 1967 war and later annexed it in a move never recognized internationally.
Technically, Syria and Israel are still at war, but the Golan, a strategic plateau, has been largely quiet for decades.

PLC marks the 65th anniversary of Naka
The Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) held on Wednesday an extraordinary session to mark the 65th anniversary of the Nakba at its headquarters in Gaza City, headed by Dr. Ahmed Bahar, PLC First Deputy Speaker.
Nakba anniversary marks the establishment of the Jewish state on the ruins of Palestinian towns and villages, the day Jewish armed forces uprooted Palestinians from their homes and lands and forcibly deported them to Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, and Europe, Dr Bahar said during the session.
He pointed to the difficult living conditions of the Palestinian refugees in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, calling to neutralize Palestinian refugee camps from Syria's internal conflict.
He renewed his rejection to land swap initiative considering it a violation of the international conventions that stressed the Palestinian right to defend their legitimate rights by all possible means.
The Palestinian right of return is a sacred right, will never be subjected to statute of limitations. No one is entitled to compromise the Palestinian and nation rights, he added.
Dr Bahar stressed that the Palestinian right of return is on the PLC's top priority.
He called on the PA to stop the security coordination with the occupation and to accelerate the national reconciliation implementation.
He stressed that the Israeli occupation will end soon and all the Palestinian rights will be restored by the Palestinian resistance option.
He condemned the Israeli court's decision to renew four MPs' detention for more 6 additional months.

Arab organization: The Arab and Islamic stance towards Palestine waned
The London-based Arab organization for human rights said that the positions of the Arab and Muslim worlds towards the Palestinian cause have waned and should be reassessed. In a press release issued on the occasion of the Nakba day, the Arab organization stressed that the Palestinian rights are inalienable and protected by the international law and the Palestinian people's determination to restore them.
The organization underlined that the Palestinian people have been facing successive catastrophes and tragedies since the first Nakba in 1948.
"In occupied Jerusalem, there is a concentration of catastrophes where the occupation commits violations against everything in the city, the human being, the stone and the trees, and even the dead in their graves have never been spared," the organization stated.
"The holy sites and the Aqsa Mosque are on the top of things being violated by the occupation which seeks anxiously to demolish it and build the so-called temple."
"What is happening in Jerusalem is much more than a catastrophe; it is a process of eradicating the Arab and Islamic identity of the city and destroying hundreds of years of a human legacy under false Talmudic claims. What is happening in Jerusalem is an accelerating process of slaughtering before the whole world," it added.

Jihad: No surrender of RoR
Islamic Jihad movement has emphasized that the Palestinian refugees’ right of return would never be surrendered regardless of sacrifices and attempts to circumvent it.
The movement said in a statement on Wednesday on the Nakba anniversary that all efforts should be made to reverse Israel’s attempt to perpetuate its occupation of Palestine.
It said that the public should be aware of national constants in light of ongoing attempts to forge history, change geography, and tamper with facts.
Jihad finally declared its rejection of the capitulation projects as envisaged by the Arab peace initiative committee.
For its part, the armed wing of Hamas, the Qassam Brigades, said in a similar statement on Wednesday that there would be no return to Palestine through negotiations.
Abu Obaida, the spokesman for the armed wing, said resistance is the only means to restore Palestinian national rights.
He said that the “Zionist entity” that was established on massacres would be only removed by more sacrifices.
The spokesman pointed out that the Qassam martyrs on the Nakba anniversary had reached 1948.

On Nakba Day, Palestinians March In Jaffa
Hundreds of Palestinians marched in Jaffa marking the 65th anniversary of the Nakba of 1948, affirming that the Palestinians are determined to achieve their full and legitimate right in the historic land of Palestine.
The Jaffa Youth Movement, that organized the activities, stated that the Palestinians will not forget their land, their memories of what have been stolen from them, and will never forget those who have been forcibly uprooted from their homes, towns and lands.
The movement said that the Palestinians, wherever they are, have the legitimate internationally guaranteed Right of Return to their homeland, and will remain steadfast until achieving their rights.
Of the 11.4 million Palestinians worldwide, 66% are forcible displaced, (refugees and internally displaced people) and over half live in the Shatat (forced exile). Instead of an event relegated to history, the Nakba continues into its 65th year – the central source for the annual increase of these displacement statistics, the BADIL - Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights has reported.
"In 1948, 1.4 million Palestinians lived in 1,300 Palestinian towns and villages in historic Palestine. The Israelis controlled 774 towns and villages and destroyed 531 Palestinian towns and villages during the Nakba. More than 800,000 of the population were driven out of their homeland to the West Bank and Gaza Strip, neighboring Arab countries and other countries of the world", Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) said Tuesday.
While statistical data show that refugees constitute 44.2% of the total Palestinian population in Palestine, records by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) showed that there were 5.3 million registered Palestinian refugees by mid-2013, constituting 45.7% of the total Palestinian population worldwide, said the PCBS.
It said 59% of the refugees live in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, 17% in the West Bank and 24% in Gaza Strip.
About 29% of registered refugees live in 58 refugee camps, of which 10 are in Jordan, nine in Syria, 12 in Lebanon, 19 in the West Bank, and eight in Gaza Strip.
These estimates also do not include Palestinians who were displaced between 1949 and the 1967 war and do not include the non-refugees who left or were forced to leave as a result of the war in 1967.
