Hamas' al-Qassam Brigades declared Monday that 10 fighters were killed in an operation in eastern Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza Strip.
It said that early Monday 12 al-Qassam fighters infiltrated an Israeli military site in eastern Beit Hanoun.
The 12 split into two groups; the first fired an RPG shell at an Israeli military jeep completely burning it, while the other clashed with soldiers in another jeep.
While one of the groups was retreating it was targeted by Israeli warplanes, as the other group clashed with Israeli special forces.
10 al-Qassam fighters were killed during the operation; two returned safely.
The brigades highlighted that the operation was in retaliation for the "massacre" in the Shujaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City on Sunday.
Israel's army spokesman confirmed that 10 Hamas fighters were killed.
"Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel through two tunnels from north Gaza. IDF intercepted and killed more than 10 terrorists," Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner wrote on his Twitter feed.
Residents in Kissufim and nearby areas in southern Israel were told to stay in their homes and a main highway to Ashkelon was closed.
Israeli casualties were reported in the media although an Israeli military spokeswoman said she could not confirm the reports.

"We've got to get over there," Kerry is heard saying on the Sunday recording. "I think, Jon, we ought to go tonight. I think it's crazy to be sitting around. Let's go."
When confronted over the remarks by Fox host Chris Wallace, Kerry reiterated Israel's right to self-defense.
"I think it's very, very difficult in these situations, obviously very difficult," Kerry said.
"You have people who've come out of tunnels. You have a right to go in and take out those tunnels. We completely support that. And we support Israel's right to defend itself against rockets that are continuing to come in. Hamas has started this process of rocketing, after Israel was trying to find the people who killed three young -- you know, one American kid, three young Israeli citizens. It's disgraceful," Kerry said.
"It’s tough to have this kind of operation. I reacted obviously in a way that ... anybody does with respect to young children and civilians.
"But war is tough, and I've said that publicly and I've said it again. We defend Israel's right to do what it is doing in order to get at those tunnels," Kerry said.
Kerry then urged Hamas to "step up and be reasonable and understand that you accept the cease-fire, you save lives."
Kerry traveled to Cairo early Monday for crisis talks on Gaza, following President Barack Obama's call for an "immediate ceasefire" between Israelis and Palestinians in the conflict.

Three Family Killed In Shuja’eyya
The Ministry of Health said the army fired missiles into the Al-Aqsa Hospital, in Central Gaza, killing four Palestinians, and injuring 40 others. Ambulances also came under direct Israeli fire while trying to move patients to Shifa medical center.
Initial reports indicate the slain Palestinians are one patient and three relatives of patients hospitalized there.
The shelling destroyed the oxygen production unit, the delivery ward, urgent care units, and the surgery wards that became nonfunctional due to the Israeli bombardment targeting the hospital.
Doctors at the hospital said the attack caused various injuries, including injuries to Palestinians injured in numerous strikes targeting Gaza.
It stated two ambulances came under Israeli fire while trying to move wounded Palestinians from the Al-Aqsa Hospital to the Shifa Medical Center, in Gaza.
The army is demanding the administration to evict the hospital, and move the patients “to other hospitals”, the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera said.
In related news, the army renewed its extensive bombardment in the Shuja’eyya neighborhood in Gaza, Sheikh Radwan area, in addition to bombarding different parts of the coastal region.
In related news, three family members have been killed, and several others injured when the army fired a missile at a home in the Shuja’eyya neighborhood, east of Gaza City.
The three have been identified as Yousef Ghazi Hamdiyya, 25, Mo’taz Jamal Hamdiyya, 18, and ‘Aaed Jamal Hamdiyya, 21.
The army fired at least 100 shells into the Shuja’eyya and Zeitoun residential areas, directly targeting home and residential buildings, especially in the densely populated Shuja’eyya neighborhood.
Initial reports indicate various casualties among the residents; yet, rescue teams are still unable to enter the area as the army is surrounding it, and targeting every car that moves, including ambulances.
At least 75 Palestinians have been killed in the Shuja’eyya neighborhood on Sunday and Monday.
The Ministry of Health called on the International Red Cross, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations, to act on ending the ongoing Israeli military aggression, and the deliberate targeting of hospital and medical centers in the coastal region.

US Secretary of State John Kerry traveled to Cairo early Monday for crisis talks on Gaza, following President Barack Obama's call for an "immediate ceasefire" between Israelis and Palestinians.
The US top diplomat is scheduled to meet with senior officials from Egypt and other countries, the State Department said, in a bid to halt a devastating land, sea and air assault that has sent thousands of terrified civilians fleeing their homes and killed over 500 Palestinians.
Kerry will seek "an immediate cessation of hostilities based on a return to the November 2012 ceasefire agreement," the White House said, stressing the need to protect civilian life both "in Gaza and in Israel."
According to the State Department, Kerry supports Egypt's initiative to bring about a ceasefire. His visit to the region comes in parallel with a high-profile peace mission by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Obama spoke Sunday by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express his "serious concern" after more than 100 Palestinians and 13 Israeli soldiers were killed in the bloodiest day since the Gaza offensive was launched.
Kerry's high-stakes trip came as US media reported that two American members of the Israeli Defense Force were killed in Gaza fighting.
The State Department said two US citizens were killed in Gaza violence, but did not immediately disclose their occupations.
Obama decries rising death toll
During their second call in three days, Obama and Netanyahu "discussed Israel's ongoing military operation," including "the loss of Israeli soldiers," the White House added.
Obama "raised serious concern about the growing number of casualties, including increasing Palestinian civilian deaths in Gaza and the loss of Israeli soldiers," the White House said.
The US leader also condemned attacks by Hamas and "reaffirmed Israel's right to defend itself."
"The president underscored that the United States will work closely with Israel and regional partners on implementing an immediate ceasefire, and stressed the need to protect civilians -- in Gaza and in Israel."
Kerry on Sunday did the rounds on the influential US television political talk shows, with Netanyahu also appearing on two of the TV programs.
The UN Security Council deplored the mounting death toll in Gaza and appealed for an immediate ceasefire.
Meeting for two hours at an emergency session, the 15-member Council called for the respect of international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians.
In a statement, the Council threw its support behind Egypt's bid to broker a truce as well as the peace mission by the UN's Ban, who is due in Kuwait on Monday before heading to Egypt, Israel and the Palestinian West Bank.
Hamas has laid out a set of conditions, including the lifting of Israel's eight-year blockade on Gaza, the opening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt and the release of scores of prisoners Israel re-arrested in recent weeks.
The demands are in line with the position of the international community and human rights groups.
