Canadian New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Sana Hassainia has walked out of the caucus over what she considered an exaggerated pro-Israel stance on the current Gaza offensive. Tunisian-born Hassainia, 39, said in an online blog posted on Wednesday she opted for such a decision due to NDP leader Thomas Mulcair’s pro-Israel position.
"It was not an easy decision to make, even if I have been thinking about it for months. My decision to leave the NDP was precipitated, among other things, by the party's positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," Hassainia said in a letter posted on her blog.
Tunisian-born Hussainia will be sitting as an independent until the next federal election.
"Today, I have the courage to make a significant gesture, to take a weight off my shoulders and stand by my convictions," she declared.

Member of Hamas's political bureau Mahmoud Al-Zahhar refuted Benjamin Netanyahu's attempt to make a comparison between his Movement and other regional groups, highlighting that Hamas is a national resistance movement struggling for liberation from the Israeli occupation. In a televised statement broadcast by Al-Aqsa satellite channel, Zahhar said Netanyahu's recent claims about Hamas were blatant lies aimed at inciting the world against it.
"Hamas is a national liberation movement aiming to liberate the Palestinian territories occupied since 1948," the Hamas official stated.
"Hamas defends the interests of its besieged people to provide them with food, medicine, electricity and freedom of movement," he added.
Netanyahu had claimed in a news conference on Wednesday night that Hamas was like other terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria and involved in global terrorism.
Abu Zuhri: Netanyahu's speech desperate attempt to restore confidence
Hamas Movement said on Wednesday that Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s speech is a desperate attempt to restore Israel’s confidence. In his brief statement, spokesman for the Movement Sami Abu Zuhri said that Israel’s threats of carrying out assassination operations prove its “bloody nature” and its lack of seriousness during the truce talks.
Such threats do not scare Hamas leaders or members, he said.
In a related context, Abu Zuhri said that Israeli failure to assassinate head of Qassam Brigades Mohamed Deif is an Israeli intelligence failure added to Israeli military and security impotence.
For his part, spokesman for Hamas movement Fawzi Barhoum said that Netanyahu’s allegations of the destruction of Hamas's military capabilities were meant to cover up for Israel’s defeat and failure.
He said, “Hamas is ready to inflict heavy losses on the enemy. We will force the occupation to meet our conditions and demands”.
Earlier Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israeli ongoing aggression on Gaza will continue along the coming days, claiming that his military operation aims to destroy Hamas and other Palestinian factions.
At a press conference together with War Minister Moshe Ya’alon, Netanyahu said that Israel will not accept to be drawn into a war of attrition. The war will continue until all its goals are achieved, he added.
“In recent weeks we've dealt Hamas a harsh blow. We've prevented, via Iron Dome, thousands of rockets from hitting our communities, and we destroyed thousands of rockets,” according to Netanyahu’s allegations.
On the other hand, Yediot Aharanot (Ynet) Hebrew newspaper has published names of some of Hamas and Qassam Brigades’ leaders who are on Israel’s assassination list.
The list includes head of Qassam Brigades Mohamed Deif who has survived an assassination attempt for the fifth time.
Ynet's Palestinian Affairs reporter, Elior Levy, said that Israel was looking since the start of the war for a strategic achievement such as the assassination of a prominent Hamas leader; however it did not succeed so far.
Former Palestinian Prime Minister and deputy head of Hamas political bureau Ismail Haneyya is on the top of Israel’s most wanted list where Israeli warplanes have bombed his home in the first days of the aggression. Haneyya has survived an assassination attempt in 2004, according to the newspaper.
Israel also aims to assassinate Hamas senior leader Mahmoud Zahhar who lost two of his sons in previous assassination attempts.
Levy added that Palestinian former Interior Minister Fathi Hamad is also included in the list.
Marwan Issa, the deputy commander of Qassam Brigades, and Raed Al-Attar, a commander of the Qassam Brigades in Rafah, are also included in Israel’s assassination list. Both previously escaped assassination attempts.
According to the newspaper, the list includes Mohammed Abu Shamala, Qassam commander southern Gaza Strip, Ahmed Ghandour, the brigade commander northern the Strip, and Khaled Mansour, the commander of Jihad movement's military wing, in addition to Ayman Nofal, Qassam Brigades commander in the central of Gaza Strip

Al-Qassam Brigades warned international airlines against flying into Ben Gurion airport starting from 6 a.m. on Thursday, declaring the ceasefire talks are over following the murder of Palestinian child Ali Deif Al-Qassam spokesperson, Abu Obaida, vowed, in a televised speech broadcast Wednesday evening, that Commander in Chief Muhammad Deif will be the commander of the army that will liberate al-Aqsa.
“Israel has only dared to kill our women and children after 45 days have passed since its offensive was launched. You’re not brave enough to kill Muhammad Deif,” he told Israelis.
Al-Qassam Brigades warned Israeli settlers, living on the periphery of Gaza Strip, to stay away from their homes, calling on those who are forced to stay to keep to their shelters.
Abu Obaida further warned against gatherings of Israeli crowds in the range of al-Qassam rockets, particularly football stadiums.
Abu Obaida said all the warnings issued by al-Qassam Brigades are to be observed until further notice.
He called on the Palestinian delegation to immediately withdraw from Cairo talks, adding: “The Egyptian-brokered initiative has been buried today with the burial of child Ali Muhammad Dheif.”
“We all know that Cairo talks deceived our peoples’ needs and wishes,” he maintained.
“Israel has deceived us. . . They violated the truce and perpetrated a heinous crime, launching a series of air strikes and arbitrary shelling targeting most notoriously al-Dalou’s family in al-Sheikh Redwan neighborhood with a wave of sadism-filled rockets.”
“We inform you, Israelis, that you’ve lost the battle. Once again you proved that you are a herd of losers. After 45 days of fighting have elapsed…all that you’ve been able to do is to kill our women and children.”
“Abu Khaled (Deif) has dragged you to shelters exactly like a herd of scared rats. We will go on until we purify our land, our entire land, from the colonizers’ desecrating grips.”
Al-Qassam Brigades dubbed Cairo-brokered talks “a dance of the sprites” that does not live up an inch to the aspirations of the Palestinian people, adding: “We were so sure from the beginning that the talks will come to a dead-end. Yet we gave our political leaders and people enough time to be able to reach a ceasefire agreement, lift the siege, and reconstruct the Strip.”
“After such long weeks of byzantine negotiations and of successive Israeli crimes, we declare the Cairo truce a born-dead initiative buried in the tomb of child Ali Deif,” al-Qassam said.
“We ask the Palestinian delegation to immediately withdraw from Cairo and to never return. There will be no return to such path after today and any move in this direction is just fruitless,” they added.
“The enemy lost a golden chance to reach a ceasefire with limited demands, for which it will pay after today,” the communiqué maintained.
“In light of all this we warn international airlines against flying into Ben Gurion airport from 6 a.m. on Thursday,” it stated.
“Israeli colonizers and the entire world have to recognize the true essence of our people’s demands. All that we wanted was to keep Israel away from our sources of living, our babies’ milk, and our fuel. But they insist on punishing us and cracking down on us whenever they wish and as much as they wish to. From now on no such things shall ever be tolerated.”
“Either we win or die,” they pledged.
