The Palestinian Authority (PA) is now engaged in a massive diplomatic effort to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in order to stop the shedding of Palestinian blood and lift the Israeli siege, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Monday.
"We are endeavoring to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip through our Egyptian brothers, and we hope the Palestinian citizens in the Gaza Strip will prioritize public interests and stop everything for the sake of reaching a ceasefire which will lay the grounds for a new stage," Abbas told TV and the PA's official news agency WAFA.
Abbas was speaking after a meeting of his cabinet in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
With regard to his upcoming international tour, Abbas said, "It will include a visit to Russia and the USA, and we will hold talks with the Russians in particular regarding the Moscow conference and the peace process." He was referring to an international peace summit, along the lines of the Annapolis meeting in November, proposed by Russian officials.
Egypt has been facilitating indirect talks between Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, Islamic Jihad, Abbas' PA, and Israel in an effort to negotiate a ceasefire between armed Palestinian groups and Israel. Earlier on Monday, a Palestinian newspaper published the outline of an Israeli ceasefire proposal that would include a halt to Palestinian rocket attacks and the opening of some of the Gaza Strip's border crossings.

Egypt has delivered an Israeli proposal for a short-term ceasefire to Hamas and Islamic Jihad, the Palestinian newspaper Al-Hayat Al-Jadida reported on Monday.
Israel is demanding a six month to one year halt on all shelling of Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip. In exchange, Israel would show flexibility about opening Gaza's border crossings, including the Rafah crossing into Egypt.

Furthermore, the Israelis refuse to withdraw from the areas they reoccupied during Operation Defensive Shield in 2002.
Hamas has reportedly accepted the idea of a ceasefire in Gaza. Islamic Jihad, the Palestinian presidency, the Popular and the Democratic Fronts for the Liberation of Palestine as well as the Popular Resistance Committees have all reportedly rejected the offer.

Hamas said on Saturday they have not been informed that negotiations have stopped between Egypt and Israel to reach a truce.
Under the proposed deal Hamas say they will halt Palestinian rocket fire on condition that Israel stops their assassinations in the Palestinian territories.
Hamas said any truce with Israel will only take place on condition the blockade of the Gaza Strip is lifted.
The Israeli side has repeatedly rejected Palestinian demands. They say they have informed the Egyptians that as far as they are concerned the month-long talks that have failed to reach any positive results are now over.
Hamas leader Ayman Taha told Ma'an that he is suspicious of the Israeli rejection of Palestinian demands for a truce and he expects an escalation of Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip is imminent.
"If the enemy has rejected the truce I am sure that the region will face a clear escalation and we are prepared and have the weapons to oppose the occupation forces," he said.
Regarding the continued closure of the Rafah border crossing and the blockade imposed on the sector, he stressed that Hamas are in negotiation with high-level Egyptian officials to reach a solution.
"The Egyptians have always asserted that they have nothing to do with the siege imposed on the Palestinians but they are calling for Palestinians to cooperate in taking responsibility for the Rafah crossing," he added.
Taha said Hamas blames the leadership of the Palestinian Authority (PA) in Ramallah and that they are responsible for the continued closure of the Rafah crossing. "The Hamas movement offered solutions to the blockade but the Palestinian Authority didn't respond," he said.
