Israel has announced that it will hit northern Gaza Strip “with great force” as it masses troops and tanks on the border with the impoverished Palestinian coastal sliver.
Israel’s chief military spokesman, Brigadier General Motti Almoz, said on Saturday there would be more strikes, especially in northern Gaza near Israel.
“We are going to attack there with great force in the next 24 hours due to a very large concentration of Hamas efforts in that area,” he added.
Late on Saturday, the military said it was ordering Palestinians in northern Gaza to “leave their homes for their own safety.”
Gaza’s Interior Ministry urged residents in the area to ignore Israel’s warnings and to stay in their homes, saying the announcement was Israeli “psychological warfare” and an attempt to create confusion.
A total of 163 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have lost their lives in the impoverished region since Tuesday. Nearly 1,100 others have been also injured in the ongoing deadly air raids.
Israeli tanks have now lined up along the Gaza border, firing into the region. Tel Aviv has also mobilized some 33,000 reservists in preparation for a possible large-scale ground incursion.
Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has warned that it is prepared to hit back at Israeli forces should the Tel Aviv regime launch a ground attack against Gaza.
People in Iran, the US, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, France, Indonesia and Britain have taken to the streets, calling for a halt on the Israeli attacks.

The Tel Aviv regime claims that the operation will target the rocket launchers of Palestinian fighters, but reports say civilians have been the main victims of the bombardments.
Israeli warplanes have bombed some 1,300 targets in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 165 Palestinians since July 8. According to a UN report, nearly 80 percent of the victims have been civilians.
In response, Palestinian resistance fighters fired retaliatory rockets into the occupied territories.

Residents must evacuate their homes by 12 pm, noon, today heading south towards Jabalia."
They continue, “The military’s operation will be temporary and short. Those who do not adhere to these directives will jeopardize their own lives and the lives of their families. Be careful, stay safe."
A spokesperson for the Israeli military said that there will be a major military operation in northern Gaza on Sunday, and warned that “This will increase the amount of casualties”. The military has already dropped over 2,000 tons of bombs on the crowded coastal Strip over the past five days, killing over 170 Palestinians. No Israelis have been killed or wounded in this same period.
The United Nations has estimated that nearly 80% of the victims are civilians. While Israeli officials claim that it is necessary to target civilian areas because “Hamas members hid behind civilians”, the bombings have resulted in very few Hamas members being killed – and those who have been identified as having a connection with the political party were not involved in any hostilities at the time they were targeted for assassination by missile.
In addition, the claim that Israel has targeted civilian buildings where Palestinian fighters store weapons has been questioned by eyewitnesses of these attacks, who say that no ‘secondary explosions’ have been heard, which would be the case if there were weapons stored in a building.
In the case of the town of al-Attara and nearby neighborhoods that received the warning leaflets Sunday morning, the residents have received no indication as to where they will be able to go to avoid bombardment, as IMEMC Gaza correspondent Rami Almeghari has pointed out, “No part of Gaza is safe at this point. There is no place that has escaped bombardment.”
The Israeli military commander said in the statement that they will be targeting civilian areas in al-Attara because "We have identified more rocket fire from the northern Strip than other sectors.”
Several hundred Palestinian homemade shells that have been fired toward Israel since the Israeli bombardment began on Tuesday. They have caused no casualties. In contrast, as of Saturday, over 2500 Israeli bombs have been dropped on Gaza. These include 456 naval rockets, 1604 air raids, and nearly 500 artillery shells.
In addition to the 174 Palestinians killed, an additional 1089 have been wounded, including 349 children, 171 women and 576 men. The Israeli bombs have targeted mosques and schools, destroying 3 mosques completely and 16 partially. 33 schools have been damaged. 6 hospitals have been targeted and partially damaged, including a center for the disabled where two disabled women were killed and scores of others were wounded.
Despite Israeli claims that these sites were ‘hideouts’ for Hamas, no Hamas fighters were among those killed in these attacks, and no secondary explosions occurred when the sites were bombed.

Israeli navy commandos launched a ground operation overnight in the north of the Gaza Strip, the first since the offensive against Hamas began, Israeli public radio said early Sunday.
The brief incursion targeted a rocket launcher site, it said. The armed branch of Hamas confirmed that Israeli commandos had exchanged gunfire with some Palestinian fighters.
A military spokesman later said four Israeli soldiers had been lightly wounded during the operation.
"During the mission a gunfight broke out, started by some terrorists operating at the site, during which four Israeli soldiers were lightly wounded," said the spokesman who declined to give further details on the operation.
The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, confirmed the exchange of gunfire "between our fighters and soldiers of the Zionist navy which tried to penetrate the zone of Sudanyia" in northwest Gaza.
It was the first ground operation in Gaza by the Israeli military since the start of its offensive on Tuesday.

The world’s top independent charity for children has warned that the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip further traumatizes young people in the besieged Palestinian enclave.
Save the Children said the mental health of Palestinian kids is being jeopardized by relentless Israeli airstrikes, emphasizing that the latest wave of air attacks has made it impossible for child psychologists to finish the delicate task of rebuilding the mental health of kids suffering from the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from previous waves of conflicts. The international nongovernmental organization further noted that children are likely to face sleeping disorders and other behavioral issues. Osama Damo, the communications senior manager for Save the Children, |
said children are likely to face a lot of disorders at sleeping times “because military operations often take place during the night.”
He added, “The fear that they will be left with is unmanageable for children.”
Damo also stated that there are organizations working in Gaza to provide safe places for children during raids.
Save the Children is calling on all sides of the conflict to agree to a ceasefire so that vital services can be provided to the children of Gaza.

The Israeli military says four soldiers have been lightly wounded in fighting with Palestinian resistance forces in the northern part of the blockaded Gaza Strip.
The military said the troopers were hurt on Saturday during a brief incursion to destroy a rocket launching site, adding that the soldiers have returned to Israel.
It is the first time that Israeli ground troops are known to have entered the Gaza Strip as the Tel Aviv regime widens its range of bombing targets in the impoverished Palestinian coastal sliver to civilian institutions.
This comes as Palestinian resistance fighters in Gaza have fired a barrage of retaliatory rockets deep into Israel as Israeli warplanes conduct fatal aerial assaults on the besieged enclave.
A series of rockets hit Ashkelon and Nahal Oz military base in southern Israel. Two rockets exploded near Dimona and three others hit the city, one of them directly targeting a gas station.
Three rockets landed in Be’er Sheva, critically injuring one person. Israeli sources say seven people are being treated for shocks after rockets hit Netivot city.

"Foreign doctors in Gaza have confirmed that Israeli missiles and shells are destructive and internationally banned".
The Palestinian Health Ministry has accused Israel of using banned weapons in pounding the Gaza Strip.
"Gaza hospitals burst at the seams of martyrs and wounded," health undersecretary Youssef Abul Resh told a press conference in Gaza City late Saturday.
He accused Israel of using banned weapons in striking the Gaza Strip, home to 1.8 million Palestinians.
"Medical teams have found wounds on the bodies of those killed and injured that are caused by the banned DIME weapons," the Palestinian official said.
"Foreign doctors in Gaza have confirmed that Israeli missiles and shells are destructive and internationally banned," he added.
Abul Resh cited that about 40 percent of those killed in ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strips were women and children.
"Children and women make up around 62 percent of those injured in the attacks," he said, going on to appeal to human rights organizations and the international community "to pile pressures on Israel to halt is aggression on the Gaza Strip".
At least 158 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds injured since Israel launched a military offensive in the Gaza Strip on Monday with the stated aim of ending rocket fire from the strip.
Gaza-based resistance factions, for their part, continue to launch low-yield rockets at Israeli cities in response to the unrelenting Israeli strikes.

Embassy in Israel arranging one-off assisted departure for Australian nationals
Australians in the Gaza Strip are being urged to leave immediately as violence in the area continues to escalate.
The Australian embassy in Tel Aviv is arranging a one-off assisted departure of Australians from Gaza, and the federal government has asked those wanting to leave to urgently contact the department of foreign affairs and trade.
The government has upgraded its travel warnings for the area after reports that more than 130 people have been killed since the violence began five days ago.
The minister for foreign affairs, Julie Bishop, said she was “deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation” in Israel and the Palestinian territories.
“The retaliatory acts from both sides that have led to civilian deaths and injuries are deeply regrettable, and I call on all parties to exercise restraint and do everything necessary to avoid a further escalation of violence,” she said.
In Sydney on Sunday about 4000 people rallied to protest against the Israeli airstrikes and troop build-up along the Gaza border.
Chanting slogans such as “Israel, USA, how many kids did you kill today?”, the crowd converged on St Andrews Square, Town Hall, at 1pm.
The Greens senator Lee Rhiannon told the crowd: “Israel is targeting the civilians of Gaza with these bombings, and that is shameful and that is what we condemn.
She said she did not want to see missiles fired from either side, but said “this is a war of the oppressor versus the oppressed”.
