Injured, denied access
Abu Sheradha, 60. Along with his wife, he was kept trapped within his home in eastern Jabaliya, surrounded by Israeli soldiers, and for 3 days wasn’t able to get the diabetes and hypertension medicine he needs.
Friday night, Red Crescent ambulances in Jabaliya collected numerous victims of smoke inhalation: a strange chemical smoke which seizes the lungs and air passage, and suffocates the victims. Many elderly were collected in turns, and a 3 month old baby was brought in held by a sobbing mother.
At least, at least we were able to reach them. A Palestinian Red Crescent dispatcher has received what he says is hundreds of calls from the northern Gaza area alone, which have been left unanswered as the areas are under Israeli military occupation.
A glimpse of some of the cases one ambulance took during a brief 6 hours:

a baby retrieved from Attattra, northwestern Gaza, where paramedics estimate 100s of calls to retrieve the injured and the dead have gone ignored due to Israeli troops occupation of the area. Despite Geneva Conventions, medical personnel are not able to reach the wounded, many of whom are critically wounded and will die due to the prevention of medical access. This baby, killed in an explosion, was then run over by an Israeli tank, according to aid workers who eventually retrieved the body. [photo: Mohammed from Khan Younis]

Free Gaza to Israel: “We are coming in on Tuesday”
For Immediate Release: (Cyprus, 11 January 2009) - The Free Gaza Movement ship, “SPIRIT OF HUMANITY,” will leave Larnaca Port at 12:00 noon, Monday, 12 January, on an emergency mission to besieged Gaza. The ship will carry desperately needed doctors, journalists, human rights workers, and members of several European parliaments as well as medical supplies.
This voyage marks Free Gaza’s second attempt to break through the blockade since Israel began attacking the Gaza Strip on 27 December. Between August and December 2008, the Free Gaza Movement successfully challenged the Israeli blockade five times, landing the first international ships in the port of Gaza since 1967.
The Israeli military violently attacked an earlier attempt by the Free Gaza Movement to send an emergency boat filled with doctors and medical supplies to Gaza. In the early hours of Tuesday, 30 December, the Israeli navy deliberately, repeatedly, and without warning rammed the unarmed ship, the DIGNITY, causing significant structural damage and endangering the lives of its passengers and crew. The ship found safe harbor in Lebanon, and is currently awaiting repairs.
Fouad Ahidar, a member of the Belgian Parliament sailing to Gaza aboard the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, responded to concerns that Israel may attack the unarmed mercy ship by saying, “I have five children that are very worried about me, but I told them, you can sit on your couch and watch these atrocities on the television, or you can choose to take action to make them stop.”
Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have injured thousands of civilians and killed over 800 people, including scores of women and children. This ongoing Israeli massacre severely and massively violates international humanitarian law defined by the Geneva Conventions, especially the obligations of an Occupying Power and the requirements of the laws of war.
The United Nations has failed to protect the Palestinian civilian population from Israel’s massive violations of international humanitarian law. Israel has closed off Gaza from the international community and demanded that all foreigners leave. But Huwaida Arraf, an organizer with the Free Gaza Movement, stated that, “We cannot just sit by and wait for Israel to decide to stop the killing and open the borders for relief workers to pick up the pieces. We are coming in. There is an urgent need for this mission as Palestinian civilians in Gaza are being terrorized and slaughtered by Israel, and access to humanitarian relief denied to them. When states and the international bodies responsible for taking action to stop such atrocities chose to be impotent, then we–the citizens of the world–must act. Our common humanity demands nothing less.”
Israel has been notified that we are coming. A copy of the notification to the Israeli Authorities is attached.
The media is invited to the Larnaca Port at 10:00am to for final preparations and a press conference before departure.
What you can do:
Take Action! CALL the Israeli Government and let them know that the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY is coming to Gaza. DEMAND that Israel immediately STOP slaughtering civilians in Gaza and STOP using violence to prevent human rights and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.

This letter serves as a formal notification to you as the Occupying Power and belligerent force in the Gaza Strip that on Monday, January 12 we are navigating the motor vessel, Spirit of Humanity, from the Port of Larnaca to the port of Gaza City. Our vessel will be flying the Greek flag, and, as such, falls under the jurisdiction of Greece.
We will be sailing from Cypriot waters into international waters, then directly into the territorial waters of the Gaza Strip without entering or nearing Israeli territorial waters. We expect to arrive at the Gaza Port on Tuesday, January 13, 2009.
We will be carrying urgently needed medical supplies in sealed boxes, cleared by customs at the Larnaca International Airport and the Port of Larnaca. There will be a total of 30 passengers and crew on board, among them members of various European Parliaments and several physicians. Our boat and cargo will also have received security clearance from the Port Authorities in Cyprus before we depart.
As it will be confirmed that neither we, the cargo, any of the boat’s contents, nor the boat itself constitute any threat to the security of Israel or its armed forces, we do not expect any interference with our voyage by Israel’s authorities.
On Tuesday, December 30, an Israeli Navy vessel violently, and without warning, attacked our motor vessel Dignity, disabling the vessel and endangering the lives of the 16 civilians on board. This notice serves as clear notification to you of our approach. Any attack on the motor vessel, Spirit of Humanity, will be premeditated and any harm inflicted on the 30 civilians on board will be considered the result of a deliberate attack on unarmed civilians.

Al Jazeera Exposes Israeli Use of White Phosphorus on Civilians
1/11/09 Al Jazeera's David Foster asked Israeli PM's spokeperson Mark Regev if they were using showers of white phosphorus on the civilian population in Gaza. He skirted around the question, and asked Al Jazeera to pose that question to the spokesperson of the IDF instead. She evaded the question, but didn't deny the use of it. Since the use of white phosphorous on a civilian population amounts to a war crime, and any military force would willingly dismiss such an allegation if it were false, we're left to conclude that it is being used. Objective observers, including observers from Human Rights Watch, have already concluded that white phosphorus is being used. White Phosphorus burns in air, and on contact will burn through flesh to the bone. The gas released from it as it burns causes corrosive clouds that are extremely poisonous. |
The audio gradually goes way out of sync, but do listen through. American media outlets are blinding their audiences to what's going on. That's particularly atrocious given it's their tax-dollars that's funding these crimes against humanity.

Saying Goodbye
leaving homes, frightened by the already-enforced threat of bombing the residential houses of the area, Eastern Jabaliya, January 3, 2009
F has had no rest since the attacks began over 2 weeks ago.
She only sporadically sends me text message updates. Earlier, she was strong, determined: “Hi, how r u? We r fine, take care of urself. We’ll stand up until death. Kisses.” Yesterday: “Hi, I’ve missed you a lot. I wish that you are okay, and wish to return back to our home. I’m dying. My thoughts and feelings are in Jabaliya. We love you,” she ends. When I spoke with her tonight, our thoughts were both on her father-in-law, who stayed behind, already a refugee and unwilling to again be forced out of his home, and on the dead, on reports of more dead friends and neighbours.
H looked very tired when I saw him days ago. Tired and somewhat gaunt. As we talked, he frequently apologized, saying he’d forgotten what he wanted to say, lost his train of thought.“I can’t think clearly,” he admitted, embarrassed. We were talking about the situation.Everyone is dealing with the deaths, the wounded, and the terror of this crisis how they can, but for so many its more than the psychological terror and very real threat to their lives. It’s not knowing where or how family members are, or mourning the dead, or mourning the un-retrievable bodies of the dead.
I saw Abed, his younger brother, a while later. He smiled, without his usual mischievous twinkle. He was carrying a plastic bag filled with what seemed to be a change of clothes.
None of us knows if H’s father, Abu N, is alive.None of us can reach him –the area has been taken over by Israeli soldiers, completely unapproachable, since the land invasion began. The family has stayed there through past Israeli army invasions, and knows how houses are occupied, sniper positions taken in the highest rooms. But they left this time, because this time the land invasion had been preceded by an unimaginable dumping of missiles, which indeed succeeded in running people out of their homes.
Abu N stayed, though. He’d already been forcibly moved from his birthplace, near what is now Ashkelon, when Israel was created.
I’d been worried some days earlier when, having just left F’s house, Sharon and I heard an explosion and saw the rise of black smoke from F’s area. It was too close, as were the many missiles that followed.
We love you,” she ends. land across from F’s house, approximately 30 metres away, where two F-16 missiles and one tank shell have beaten the earth and shaken the surrounding houses
At 4 am January 3rd, shortly after I was shaken by the missile which landed somewhere close by, F texted me: “They shot a bomb outside our house. The glass…” she didn’t finish, but she didn’t have to. I was with the Red Crescent en route to the just-bombed American high school, in Beit Lahia, when I reached her on the phone.“We don’t know where it landed,” she whispers frantically. “Maybe it’s outside the door. We’re scared.” And they had reason to be, |
as every night until then, and often during the day, she told me of the missiles which had landed out front, to the side, behind the house.
I saw her the morning that the land invasion began, with her family, carrying what bags they could, in tears.
I didn’t expect them to leave: they’d been so resolute about sticking it out, as they had in past invasions. But this assault is different than past ones.Everyone tells me.And so they chose to leave, to hope that the family they went to stay with would be in a safer area.
After looking at the newest damage around F’s house, I spoke with neighbours. They, like her father-in-law, were staying. “Where would we go?” they asked, the question everyone asked, the question which led to the UN school which was bombed. They stayed. As did Abu Nasser’s brother. He told me about his house: “I only built this 2 years ago,” gesturing around the house.
“How am I supposed to afford to build a new one?”He expected to be bombed, but again, where to go?In Gaza, small Gaza, one can run around in circles (although now one cannot run from North to South –the road is cut by the presence of Israeli troops –and one doesn’t run in the dark –an invitation to the drones supervising from above.) but one can’t escape the bombs, anywhere.

The area in question, where Abu Nasser, and neighbours, potentially may still be, has been occupied and is thought to be the area of some of the worst massacres in this war on Gaza.Three older men and women who managed to escape two days ago told me of their torment, mild in comparison to that of the Samouni family in Zaitoun, or the unknown victims in the northwest.
They were kept for 3 days, locked at gunpoint in their home, and at some point either before or during trying to get away, were shot at.One older woman showed her shot wrist, shin and punched face, and spoke of her assassinated husband, shot dead. The latest news to come out of the area was of Abed Rabbo’s family, at least 8 killed, 10 injured by Israeli soldiers, in eastern Jabaliya. |
