Dania Arshid, 17
Dozens of Palestinian citizens are spending a lot of time in temperatures of minus 40 degrees, but it is not something that they have decided for themselves. They were simply Palestinians under Israeli military occupation; they were — past tense — for they are now dead and being kept in mortuary refrigerators.
These young people were not protesting against or confronting the occupation when they were shot. Some were shot in cold blood in what were little more than field executions carried out by Israeli soldiers across the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, under the pretext that they were about to carry out an attack. Cameras have documented some of these executions, during which the trigger-happy soldiers rushed to kill boys and girls who were not usually posing any real threat to the occupation forces.
Dania Arshid, 17, for example, was one such victim. She was killed by Israeli occupation forces in Hebron when she was hit by 10 bullets on 25 October, 2015. Shocking images show the Palestinian girl lying on the ground with her face covered, while soldiers calmly sip their coffee. The occupation authorities kept her body for a whole week before releasing it for burial. In other cases, Palestinian corpses have been kept for up to 20 years.
These field executions are usually carried out under a ready-made pretext, namely suspicion of a knife attack. Dozens of young Palestinian boys and girls have been shot dead since October 2015 in this way, their bodies ending up in Israeli refrigerators.
Moreover, when the occupation forces fire live bullets at Palestinian demonstrators, they sometimes try to abduct the bodies of the martyrs. In one outrageous case on 21 July last year, local people rushed to take the body through the back door of Al-Maqassed Hospital in Jerusalem before the Israelis could kidnap the corpse.
The young man in question was shot and killed while he was protesting alongside other unarmed Palestinians, who refused to accept Israel’s attempts to impose its hegemony over Al-Aqsa Mosque by installing electronic gates and introducing humiliating inspection procedures for worshippers. His burial was rushed so as to prevent the Israelis from taking his body and placing him in a mortuary refrigerator for months on end.
The occupying authorities impose “compulsory residence” in their refrigerators for a reason, namely the fear of the dead. What they fear in particular is the culture of celebrating the martyrs and inflaming emotions, thus fuelling the Intifada on the Palestinian street.
Keeping “refrigerator hostages” for weeks or months and perhaps for years is an inhumane tactic based on the immoral abuse of Palestinian society, as is the secret burial of some martyrs in unmarked graves, keeping their relatives in ignorance of their final resting place. How much longer will this be allowed to happen? How many more Palestinian families are to be kept waiting for their children’s remains so that they can kiss a long-awaited skull or embrace a calcified body that has spent ages in a mortuary refrigerator before giving it the dignified burial that it deserves?

Atef Mohammed Saleh, 32
Israeli military forces have shot dead a Palestinian man at the Gaza Strip's border, claiming he was going to “sabotage” a fence separating the besieged territory from the occupied territories.
The Israeli military admitted in a statement Sunday that the man died after sustaining fatal injuries.
The deadly encounter came a day after the Israeli military clashed with anti-occupation protesters at the fence, killing one person and injuring about 400 other people.
Nearly 175 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces ever since anti-occupation protest rallies began in the Gaza Strip on March 30. A total of 19,139 Palestinians have also sustained injuries.
The Gaza clashes reached their peak on May 14, on the eve of the 70th anniversary of Nakba Day, or the Day of Catastrophe, which coincided this year with the US embassy relocation from Tel Aviv to occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds.
Earlier on Sunday, a video clip made the rounds on social media, appearing to show Israeli troops shooting a Palestinian boy at a time when he posed no obvious threat.
In the video, 16-year-old Ahmad Misbah Abu Toyour is standing near the fence as he is taking part in "The Great March of Return" protests. Toyour throws a stone at Israeli forces, and a shot rings out and he falls to the ground obviously in a great deal of pain.
The Palestinian teenager succumbed to his gunshot wounds at the European Hospital in the city of Khan Yunis, located about 25 kilometers south of Gaza City, on Saturday morning.
Army Kills A Palestinian In Northern Gaza

The slain Palestinians have been identified as Attaf Abed-Rabbo Saleh, 32, from Jabalia.
It added that the soldiers also detained three other Palestinians, and claimed they carried knives, and were moved to an interrogation facility.
After shooting the young man, the soldiers crossed the fence and advanced a few meters into Gaza, before taking him, and the other Palestinians. It later said the man has died from his wounds.
Medical sources in Gaza said Palestinian medics tried to reach the seriously wounded young man, but the soldiers opened fire at them, preventing them from even approaching him.

Tension has flared up in Umm al-Fahm since Friday after the Israeli police killed Mahamid over an alleged attempt to stab an Israeli soldier, and arrested three Palestinian youths on charges of assisting him.

Bereaved families clash with relatives of terrorists whose bodies are being held by Israel during a hearing in the HCJ; lawyer from the Attorney General's office says withholding bodies is necessary for future prisoner exchange negotiations with Hamas.
Bereaved Israeli families and relatives of Palestinian terrorists clashed at a High Court of Justice hearing on Tuesday.
The confrontation took place at the end of a hearing on a petition to return the bodies of terrorists being held by Israel. It quickly turned violent with some participants exchanging blows, pushing and cursing. video
Matan Peleg, the CEO of the right-wing Im Tirtzu movement, who also attended the hearing, said the behavior of the families of the terrorists serve as proof of their support for terrorism.
"If there was ever a need for any more proof that the families of the terrorists support the murderers raised in their homes, we saw it clearly during the hearing," he said.
“The reality in which the bereaved families are physically attacked by the relatives of the murderers in the High Court is completely unacceptable. It’s shameful," Peleg vented.
The hearing had a panel of seven judges, headed by the Supreme Court Chief Justice Esther Hayut.
In the past, the High Court ruled there was no legal authority to withhold the bodies of terrorists. In response, the state requested for another hearing.
Attorney Aner Helman from the Attorney General's Office argued that Israel is only responding to similar actions of terror organizations in Gaza.
"As we know, Hamas still holds captive an Israeli citizen and two bodies of IDF soldiers, who are being held solely for the purpose of prisoner exchange negotiations with Israel," he explained.
Helman also added that Israel is currently holding the bodies of six terrorists, with four being from the West Bank and the other two from Jerusalem.
Herzl Hajaj, whose daughter Lt. Shir Hajaj was murdered in a vehicular terror attack in Jerusalem in 2016, also attended the hearing, saying the events at the court were "absurd."
"This is completely absurd. A family that prides itself on educating their sons to murder and hate Israelis should not be allowed to have a dignified burial place. This is a win for terrorism. Every terrorist's body has to be thrown into the sea like the US did with Osama bin Laden," he opined. video video
