Another casualty was added to the death toll of the recent Israeli aggression in the West Bank and Gaza Strip from May 10 – 21, when the Palestinian Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced the death of the young man Fadi Sadiq Musa Washha (34 years).
Fadi had been shot in the head by Israeli soldiers two weeks ago while participating in a protest in solidarity with the people of Gaza, where bombs were raining down, killing whole families crushed under the rubble of their homes.
He was near the northern entrance to Al-Bireh, in the Ramallah district, when Israeli soldiers invading the village shot him twice in the head. He was rushed to the hospital and into surgery, and has been in the intensive care unit until his death on Wednesday June 2nd.
The number of Palestinians killed during the Israeli aggression rose to 255, including 66 children and 39 women; among the dead are seventeen elderly and five with special needs.
Last week, a Palestinian died of his wounds on Monday, another died of his wounds on Thursday, and another four Palestinians were found buried under the rubble left of their homes after the Israeli bombardment.
Over 50,000 people were driven from their homes during the Israeli bombardment.
Now that the bombing has temporarily ceased, the Palestinians of Gaza remain trapped within the open-air prison of the Gaza Strip, in which 2.4 million Palestinians live crowded together in harsh economic conditions due to an Israeli siege that has been in place for fourteen years.

Medics and rescue teams located, on Monday evening, the corpse of a Palestinian who was killed by Israeli missiles, during the recent Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.
The Health Ministry in Gaza said the corpse of Walid Shamali (Abu Bilal) was found under the rubble of a bombarded building in the Sheja’eyya neighborhood, east of Gaza city.
The Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said Walid was one of its senior leaders.
In related news, the Israeli army continued the closure of Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) Crossing for the twentieth consecutive day. The crossing is the only commercial terminal leading to Gaza.
On May 21st, the Health Ministry in Gaza said 243 Palestinians, including 66 children, 39 women, and 17 elderly were killed by Israeli missiles and shells during the eleven-day Israeli offensive, and added that 1910 Palestinians were injured, among them 560 children, 380 women and 91 elderly.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)said the Israeli missiles displaced more than 75.000 Palestinians, including 28.700 who sought shelter in UNRWA-run schools.
Three mosques were destroyed, in addition to 40 mosques and one church that were severely damaged by Israeli missiles and shells.
The Israeli missiles also destroyed 1447 residential units and caused damage to 13.000.
The number of homes and residential towers that were destroyed is 205, in addition to 33 media agencies, while many other buildings, housing institutions, and societies were partially damaged.
The Israeli missiles also damaged 75 government-run facilities, including public service centers, in addition to security and police stations.
68 schools and clinics were severely or partially damaged by Israeli missiles, in addition to 490 farms, barns, wells, water networks, and agricultural pools, that were damaged.

A new report documenting several violations of international humanitarian law committed by Israel during its recent military attack on the Gaza Strip from 10 – 21 May was released today by the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor.
The report concluded that the International Criminal Court (ICC) must hold the Israeli leaders and soldiers accountable and not allow them to enjoy impunity.
Titled “Inescapable Hell”, the report examined the Israeli army’s violations during its recent military attack on the blockaded Gaza Strip.
The report was based on field research and documentation by Euro-Med Monitor’s team during and in the aftermath of the military attack, where dozens of field interviews and serious violations were documented.
Statistics support the report, which presents day-by-day documentation of the Israeli attack, including violations such as mass killings and premeditated killings by deliberately targeting citizen gatherings and vehicles.
The Israeli forces also targeted children, women (including pregnant women), people with disabilities, paramedics, medical facilities, and media and educational institutions.
Over the 11 days of the attack, the Israeli air, land, and sea forces carried out a massive military attack on the Gaza Strip, the fourth since 2008. They dropped tons of high-explosive bombs, leaving hundreds dead and wounded.
The attack caused massive destruction to the infrastructure, civilian objects, and homes, many of which were bombed with residents inside. Many families were wiped out altogether.
The Israeli forces called their military operation “Guardian of the Walls,” while the Palestinian factions called their missile attacks during the same period “Sword of Jerusalem”.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the attacks killed 254 Palestinians, including 66 children, 39 women and 17 elderly, and injured 1,948 others. (The number of wounded reached 2,212, according to Euro-Med Monitor’s field count).
The report monitored the bombing and destruction of civilian objects, including residential neighborhoods, towers, homes, institutions, civil society organizations, government headquarters, religious facilities, and infrastructure.
The Israeli air raids also destroyed or damaged power, communications, and Internet networks as well as many other economic facilities.
The report highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation because of the Israeli military attack, and the mass displacement of about 120,000 Palestinians from their homes within the Gaza Strip. In addition to the collective punishment, it contained on the Strip’s population of more than two million people.
Israel has committed grave violations of the rules of international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, military necessity, and special protection in armed conflicts.
Various weapons and ammunition and disproportionate destructive force have been used against Gaza residents and their properties. These violate the laws related to protecting civilians and their property during times of war, provided by the international humanitarian law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, which relates to the protection of civilians in wartime.
The Israeli forces fired rockets and shells containing thousands of kilograms of explosives in indiscriminate or sometimes planned attacks, without regard to the safety of civilians in the Gaza Strip, which is one of the most densely populated places in the world.
The legal conclusions of the attacks and their consequences and effects confirm that what Israel did may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. This was exemplified by the bombing of houses whilst their inhabitants were still inside and the indiscriminate bombing.
“ICC should include these practices in its investigations it finally decided to conduct into previous violations, work seriously to hold Israeli leaders and soldiers accountable and not allow them to escape punishment,” Euro-Med Monitor said.
The organization also called on the European Union to activate all tools of pressure on Israel to stop its continuous violations. “The international community must shoulder its moral and legal responsibilities to achieve accountability, fairness and ensure that Israel is held accountable for its crimes and that the Palestinians obtain protection and justice.”
Action is needed to end the blockade of Gaza and the ongoing collective punishment of Palestinians in Gaza and ensure the facilitation of reconstruction and adequate funding for it while securing urgent support to help families facing difficulties after the attack.

Palestinian medical sources have confirmed, Monday, that two young men died from serios wounds they suffered when the Israeli army bombarded Khuza’a town, east of Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, and in Beit Hanoun, in northern Gaza, during the recent Israeli escalation on the coastal region.
The sources said the Palestinian, Osama Ashraf Abu Reeda, 23, suffered life-threatening wounds during the Israeli offensive, and remained at the Intensive Care Unit after surgery, until he succumbed to his injuries.
Osama was from Khuza’a town, near Khan Younis.
In addition, another Palestinian, identified as Mahmoud Ammar Abu Jarad, from Beit Hanoun, in the northern part of the Gaza strip, died from serious wounds he suffered on May 11.
It is worth mentioning that, on Monday evening, Palestinian search and rescue teams located the remains of four young Palestinian men under the rubble of a building in the al-Fakhari area, east of Khan Younis.
The Health Ministry in Gaza said the latest casualties bring the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli army missiles and shells, during the eleven days of the Israeli offensive to 253.
Four more bodies pulled from rubble in Gaza, death toll hits 252
The rescue crews pulled the bodies of four more Palestinian civilians from under the rubble caused during the eleven days of Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, said sources.
The bodies of four people were pulled out of the rubble in Khan Younis city, in the southern Gaza Strip, and taken to Nasir Hospital in Gaza city.
This brings the total number of Palestinians killed during the eleven days of Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip to 252.

With Israel’s latest round of bombing in the Gaza Strip over, the standard whitewashing is likely next. Israel will probably soon announce it is looking into several “exceptional incidents” related to the bombings.
A few months later, the Military Advocate General will conclude no breaches of the law took place, except perhaps in one or two cases in which largely symbolic action will be taken against the persons involved. He may also recommend minor revisions to procedures or to the military decision making process.
This forecast is based on Israel’s past conduct in similar circumstances. Investigations are always carried out by the military, freeing government level officials – who authorized the bombing policy and ordered the use of lethal military force – from investigation or accountability.
The senior military commanders in charge of implementing the policy and the MAG who provided a legal stamp of approval have never been investigated, either. As a result, no one responsible for this policy of repeated human rights violations has ever been investigated.
Investigations into previous rounds of fighting in Gaza were left to the military law enforcement system, which operates as a whitewashing mechanism. To the best of B’Tselem’s knowledge, these investigations have resulted, to date, in the following criminal measures:
While Israeli officials downplay the importance of these investigations, arguing all of Israel’s actions are legal, they do recognize the contribution they make to deflecting international criticism and possible intervention from the International Criminal Court in The Hague. This is especially relevant now, as the ICC Prosecutor has recently launched an investigation into Israel’s actions in the Occupied Territories – yet will not be able to proceed if Israel carries out its own reliable investigation and holds those responsible for violations accountable.
Calling what the Israeli mechanisms do an “investigation” is not enough. Common sense, not to mention the Rome Statute – the ICC’s constitution – distinguish real investigations from actions taken by a state that is unable or unwilling to get to the truth. Investigating a handful of low-ranking soldiers while ignoring those truly responsible for a policy and its results, including senior government and military officials, is a far cry from the standards of a real investigation.
Moreover, the official premise that Israeli actions are lawful is unfounded. Having legal advisors greenlight the bombings and the open-fire policy is not enough.
International humanitarian law (IHL) was formulated when states came together to find ways to minimize harm to civilians and spare them suffering in wartime. The legal opinions that Israel flaunts – which permit, for example, decimating entire families and bombing civilian infrastructure – are light-years away from achieving this aim. They empty IHL of any real meaning, relying on a manipulative, unreasonable interpretation that provides justification for massive harm to civilians and civilian objectives. Instead of minimizing violence, Israel’s legal counselors use this body of law to justify it.
Israel has again committed war crimes in the Gaza Strip. These crimes must be properly investigated and the persons responsible punished accordingly. This is crucial not only in order to achieve justice for the victims and their families, but in order to ensure that a similar policy, with such an intolerable price, is not implemented again.

Investigations into previous rounds of fighting in Gaza were left to the military law enforcement system, which operates as a whitewashing mechanism. To the best of B’Tselem’s knowledge, these investigations have resulted, to date, in the following criminal measures:
- After Operation Cast Lead, the MAG determined that legal standards had been met in all but three cases. In one, a soldier was convicted of credit card theft and sentenced to 7.5 months in prison and a demotion; in another, two soldiers were convicted of using a Palestinian child as a human shield and given a three-month suspended sentence and a demotion; in the third, a soldier was convicted of unlawful use of firearms for killing two Palestinian women (a mother and daughter) and given a 45-day prison sentence. This followed a round of fighting in which Israel killed 1,391 Palestinians – at least 759 of whom did not participate in the hostilities, including 318 minors under the age of 18 – destroyed more than 3,500 homes, leaving tens of thousands without shelter, and wreaked havoc upon other structures and infrastructure facilities in Gaza.
- After Operation Protective Edge, the MAG found that the law had been upheld with the exception of a single case, in which three soldiers were convicted of stealing NIS 2,420. They were sentenced to two to four months of community service. Some of the cases are still in various stages of examination. This followed a round of fighting in which Israel killed 2,203 Palestinians – 1,372 of whom did not participate in the hostilities, including 528 minors under the age of 18 – and destroyed or severely damaged more than 18,000 homes, leaving more than 100,000 Palestinians homeless.
- The military is still investigating the “March of Return” protests. To date, one soldier has been convicted of abuse of authority in a manner that endangers human life for shooting and killing a 14-year-old Palestinian and sentenced to one month’s community service. During these protests, Israeli security forces – mostly snipers – killed 223 Palestinians, 46 of them minors under the age of 18, and injured 8,079 with live fire.

The owner of the al-Jalaa tower, which was destroyed by the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza and used to house the offices of international media organizations, decided on Saturday to file a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC), confirming that there was no military target in the building.
The tower, which consisted of 13 floors, housed the offices of the Associated Press and the Qatari Al-Jazeera network, as well as other offices and residential apartments.
The bombing of the building promoted international criticism and demands to ensure the protection of the media. For its part, the Associated Press called for an independent investigation into the bombing of the building.
According to a complaint by the owner of the tower, Jawad Mahdi, the attack on al-Jalaa tower on May 15 was a war crime.
Lawyer Gilles Duffer said in a statement, “We often hear that this tower may have been destroyed due to the presence of military equipment or an armed resistance team but this is something we completely deny after we studied the case.”
Duffer told AFP outside the ICC building, where about ten demonstrators gathered in solidarity with the Palestinians, that Israel was unable to prove the presence of any military objective for the attack.

Medical teams recovered on Friday morning the bodies of nine resistance fighters who were killed in a tunnel east of Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip, 10 days ago.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that the civil defense crews were able to recover the bodies of Palestinians who had been martyred in the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.
On 11/05/2021, Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades announced that a site where its members were present had been bombed while they were working to repel the aggression, confirming the presence of martyrs and missing persons.
Medical teams also recovered the body of the three-year-old child Maryam al-Talbani, from under the rubble of the al-Tilbani building in Tal al-Hawa neighborhood.
The teams are still searching for more bodies under the rubble after the announcement of the cessation of the occupation’s aggression which hindered the recovery of the bodies of the martyrs throughout the period of the aggression.
The ministry announced that the death toll from Israel’s aggression against the embattled Gaza Strip has risen to 243, including 66 children, 39 women and 17 elderly, and 1910 others were injured, including hundreds of children and women.
