Israeli occupation forces, reinforced with tanks and military vehicles, coming from Sofa Crossing east of Rafah, penetrated into the northeast of Rafah. They moved 3km to the west up to Salah El-Din Street (the main road between the north and south of the Gaza Strip), near the European Hospital.
Then, they moved 1km to the north on Salah El-Din Street, reaching the suburbs of Khan Yunis. The Palestinian National Security Forces and gunmen confronted the invading forces. Exchanges of fire broke out until 04:30 local time, during which a member of the Palestinian National Security Forces Mohammed, from Rafah was killed by an artillery shell.
In addition, Hassan ‘Ali El-‘Omour, 25, was seriously injured by a live bullet in the chest. He was evacuated to the intensive care unit at Shifa’ Hospital in Gaza City. Furthermore, bulldozers of the Israeli occupation forces demolished a site of the Palestinian National Security Forces near Sofa Crossing.
After they seized control of Salah El-Din Street, Israeli occupation forces took position at a junction, leading to “Morag” settlement in the west and Sofa Crossing in the east. It is worth mentioning that Salah El-Din Street is the sole outlet between Rafah and the rest of the Gaza Strip after Israeli occupation forces had closed the western road near “Morag” settlement. PCHR fears that controlling the street will pave the way for Israeli occupation forces to control the area and establish roadblocks, isolating Rafah, similar to the situation between Khan Yunis and Deir El-Balah.
According to PCHR’s investigations, Israeli tanks were positioned on five sites on both sides of Salah El-Din Street, surrounded by sand barriers. At approximately 10:00 local time, the Israeli occupation forces fired at Palestinian a civilian car that tried to travel on the street. The Israeli occupation forces also destroyed branch roads that Palestinians use to travel to and from Rafah.

Continued Assassinations and Extra-Judicial Killings
On Monday, the Israeli occupation forces assassinated one of the most prominent Palestinian political leaders, Abu Ali Mustafa, Secretary General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
This horrible crime was a turning point in the Israeli government’s assassination policy. Previous assassinations targeted those described by the Israeli government as “Intifada activists,” but this time the target was one of the most prominent Palestinian political leaders, and a symbol of the national struggle.
PCHR learnt that on Monday morning, at approximately 11:15 local time, Israeli combat helicopters fired two rockets at the office of Secretary General of the PFLP, the second most prominent political party of the Palestinian national movement, and one which opposes the Oslo agreements. The rockets hit the office, an apartment on the third floor of a building behind the office of the Ramallah-Al-Bireh Governorate in Al-Bireh. One rocket penetrated an eastern window of the Abu Ali Mustafa’s office, killing him instantly.
The other rocket penetrated a northern window of the office. The apartment was totally destroyed and five Palestinians, including a woman resident of the building, were injured as follows:
1) ‘Aqel Ahmed Mohammed Salah, 32, from Burqa village, director of the office, injured by shrapnel in the neck;
2) Raed Rashed Battat, from Al-Zhahereya village near Hebron, an employee at the office, injured by shrapnel in the head and the left hand;
3) Ma’n ‘Abdu Nasrallah, 31, from Ramallah, an employee at the office, injured by shrapnel in the left thigh;
4) Ahmed Salim Masa’id, 28, from Nablus, an employee at the office, injured by shrapnel in the right ankle; and
5) Zahera Hamed ‘Ali El-Sulh, 52, from Al-Bireh, resident of the building, injured by shrapnel in the abdomen.
According to Palestinian security sources, the attack was launched by Israeli combat helicopters that were flying over Kubar village, 15km to the north of Al-Bireh.
Abu Ali Mustafa is the nom de guerre of Mustafa Ali El-Zabri, 62, from Arrabeh village near Jenin.
In a press release, PCHR strongly condemned this criminal act by Israeli occupation forces, which was carried out according to a declared policy of assassination adopted by the Israeli government, in violation of international law and international humanitarian law. PCHR believes that the assassination policy, including this most heinous crime, further proves the aggressive nature of the Israeli government and refutes its claims of wanting peace.
This crime was certainly committed after a deliberate decision taken by the Israeli government, headed by the war criminal Ariel Sharon, to escalate tension in the whole region. In light of continued escalation of Israeli aggression, PCHR reiterated its call for the international community, through its organizations and agencies, to immediately intervene to prevent further deterioration of the situation in the region. PCHR also called upon the international community to provide protection for the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, who face the most horribly destructive weapons of the Israeli arsenal, used with the full political support of the US administration.

In Memoriam: Abu Ali Mustafa
Abu Ali Mustafa was a Palestinian leader who lived and died defending the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people. Ten years ago today (August 27, 2001), a U.S-made Israeli army Apache helicopter fired two missiles into his office, blowing him to pieces.
This was one of many targeted assassinations of Palestinian leaders, one component of Israel's brutal and consistent policy of ethnic cleansing being carried out against the Palestinian people. Abu Ali Mustafa (Mustafa El-Zabri) was born in the village of Arrabeh, near Jenin, in 1938. At the age of 17, he joined the Arab National Movement in Jordan, where he confronted the Jordanian government's cooperation with the British colonizers. Two years later, in 1957, political parties were banned in Jordan and Abu Ali Mustafa was arrested and sentenced by a military court to five years in an East Jordan prison. After being released in 1961, Abu Ali Mustafa continued his political work with the Arab National Movement and became responsible for the Northern District of the West Bank.
After the 1967 War, Abu Ali Mustafa joined Dr. George Habash in forming the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. He led the first commandos through the Jordan River inside Palestine and started forming the underground body of the PFLP. The Israelis searched in vain for him while he operated in the West Bank. After several months, he secretly returned to Jordan.
In addition to being responsible for the PFLP in the West Bank, Abu Ali became the commander-in-chief of the PFLP military forces (including the battles of Black September). The PFLP engaged in violent resistance to bring the Palestinian plight to the world's attention, and succeeded in doing so. One of the PFLP's biggest operations was the concurrent hijacking of 4 aircraft and blowing them up (after releasing the passengers).

After the confrontation with the Jordanian army in the battles of Black September (1970), Abu Ali relocated to direct operations from Lebanon. In 1972, at the Third National Conference of the PFLP, Abu Ali was elected as a deputy to the Secretary-General, Dr. Habash. In 1982, following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, Abu Ali and other PFLP members moved to Syria. While residing there, he resisted Syria's attempts to control the PFLP, resulting in a temporary relocation to Iraq in the late 70's. From 1987 until 1991, he was also a member of the PLO's Executive Committee.
In 1999, the Palestinian Authority arranged permission for Abu Ali to return to Palestine, with the promise to Israel of curbing the PFLP's activities. At the PFLP Sixth National Conference in July 2000, Abu Ali was elected Secretary-General.
Abu Ali advocated for a one state solution, where Palestinians and Jews all had equal rights. He was against the Oslo agreements, and was a strong defender of the Palestinian right to return.
Abu Ali asserted that "we believe that the Palestinian people, both in the Diaspora and under occupation, have the right to struggle using all means, including the armed struggle, because we believe that the conflict is the constant, while the means and tactics are the variables." Because of its ideology of confronting Israeli occupation and terrorism with armed resistance, the PFLP has been listed by the U.S. government as a "terrorist organization."
Rest in peace, Abu Ali Mustafa... we will carry on the struggle in your footsteps...

Ibrahim Muhammad Hasan Sharaf 17
Early in the morning, Ibrahim, from Tal Al-Za’tar neighborhood in Jabalya, was killed by an artillery shell fired by Israeli occupation soldiers, positioned at the border east of Beit Lahia.
It has not been clear why Sharaf was in this area. However, initial investigations proved excessive use of force by the Israeli occupation forces, who fired an artillery shell at the victim without any prior warning and without having resorted to any less lethal means, especially as the victim was not armed. Sharaf was not known to be affiliated with any political party. It is likely that he was with some companions trying to sneak into Israeli territories, searching for work in the wake of the economic crisis in the Gaza Strip.
According to information gathered by PCHR, Sharaf had left his house with two companions on Sunday, August 26, 2001, at approximately 22:00 local time. His father mentioned that he had not come back at that night. On the following day, the father was informed with the death of son.
He went to Shifa’ Hospital to identify his son’s body, which was divided by an artillery shell into two parts.
According to PCHR’s investigations, the three companions went to the border area, east of Beit Lahia, not far away from their houses. When they were approximately 200m away from the border, Israeli occupation soldiers fired an artillery shell at them, but none of them was injured and they escaped. Then, the Israeli soldiers fired another artillery shell that directly hit Sharaf, killing him instantly.

A Palestinian statement that four bodies had been retrieved from the scene was contradicted by the Israeli army, which claimed that five Palestinians were killed. The fifth body has not, however, yet been accounted for.
Thousands of mourners joined a funeral procession for the four, chanting "uprising until death". The march was led by 30 Palestinian gunmen, who fired shots into the air.
The latest killings came as Arab foreign ministers prepared to meet in Cairo today, at the request of the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, who wants to see a common Arab stand against the Israelis.
Hours before the clash, the UN security council held a debate on the conflict, though there was little consensus about the best way to bring an end to the violence.
In Jerusalem, the visiting German foreign minister, Joschka Fischer, said that Middle East peace talks, tentatively set for Berlin, must be well prepared, and that he was in touch with the United States, Russia and the European Union on the issue.
The talks would be held between the Israeli foreign minister, Shimon Peres, and the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.
Over the past two days, Mr Fischer has been shuttling back and forth between Israeli and Palestinian leaders to help arrange truce talks. Mr Peres has proposed a gradual truce, to be implemented first in relatively quiet areas of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Mr Fischer told the Israeli parliament speaker, Avraham Burg, in a meeting today that "the only thing that can stop this crazy cycle of bloodshed ... is a total freeze of [Israeli] settlements and a total freeze of violence," Mr Burg told Israeli radio.
Today's events in the West Bank began sometime after midnight. Soldiers from the elite commando unit Egoz, trained for guerrilla warfare, spotted three Palestinians trying to plant a bomb in the area of Shavei Shomron, a Jewish settlement near the Palestinian town of Nablus, according to the brigade commander in the area, Colonel Yossi Adiri.
The soldiers opened fire, killing two Palestinians and wounding the third, who escaped, Col Adiri told Israel army radio.
"An hour later, the force identified another three people, one armed, approaching the bodies, and killed two of them," Col Adiri said. "After they [the soldiers] charged, they killed the third."
The army initially said that armed men approached the area in an ambulance, but later withdrew that claim. A bomb that had been planted by the Palestinians in the area was defused, according to the army.
According to Palestinian witnesses, the incident began with an exchange of fire between Palestinian gunmen from Nablus and Israeli soldiers. After one of the gunmen went missing, the others came to the nearby village of Beit Iba to ask residents to form a search party.
Dozens of villagers began combing the olive groves near the village, said one of the villagers, Yassid Ismail. At one point, three of the villagers also went missing, and searches concentrated on a major road near the village used by Jewish settlers and Israeli troops. Palestinian ambulances approaching the area came under fire from the Israeli soldiers, Ismail said.
At daybreak, the villagers discovered four bodies in the area.
Israeli troops eventually permitted ambulances to take away the bodies of the three villagers, but kept the body of the gunman, Ismail said. The body was later turned over to the Palestinians.
Col Adiri said that he had passed warnings to Palestinian officials after the first incident that no one should approach the area because troops were still operating there.
The three villagers killed were identified as Hakem Tayeh, 22, Fadi Samani, 25, and Zaher Ismail, 30.
Hospital officials in Nablus said one of the men had been shot 10 times. None of the three had been involved in gun battles with Israelis in the past, villagers said.
The fourth man was identified as Ahed Fares.

northwest of Nablus, and a military site of the Israeli occupation forces on ‘Eibal Mount, north of Nablus, when they were fired at by Israeli soldiers. Later, the IOF claimed that ‘Abdel-Haq was a member of an armed group that was about to attack a military site at the aforementioned bypass road.
It is worth mentioning that Firas was the second member of his family to be killed in the Intifada. His brother Hammam was killed on May 19, 2001 during clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and the Israeli occupation forces at the southern entrance to Nablus. Mahdi Israeli occupation soldiers shot dead Mahdi from ‘Anabta village near Tulkarm, a member of the Palestinian Military Intelligence Service, with live bullets in the chest and the right leg. According to available information, IOF might have killed Mizyed after he was wounded and incapacitated. At approximately 19:20 local time, IOF in military vehicles on the Nablus-Tulkarm road, near Ramin village southeast of Tulkram, fired at Mizyed. He was near an Israeli military roadblock at the entrance to Ramin village. The IOF claimed that their soldiers fired at Mezyed during an exchange of fire with a number of Palestinian militants. On August 7, 2001, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz carried a report by Reuters press agency that eyewitnesses saw four Israeli soldiers chasing Mizyed. They caught him and severely beat him on the head until he lost consciousness. IOF prevented an ambulance from the Palestine Red Crescent Society from evacuating Mizyed from the area. Medical personnel saw IOF removing the victim’s body from the area before withdrawing. They kept his body until the following day. According to medical sources at Tulkram Hospital, Mizyed was beaten and tortured after he had been wounded. in the chest and the right leg. His skull was broken and his brain exposed. There were injuries in his chest, thighs, and legs. X-rays showed shrapnel in the right leg, but no signs of live bullets or shrapnel in the head. All these details raise suspicions that Mizyed might have been beaten and tortured before he died. |
