The Israeli occupation stepped up attacks on Palestinian journalists and violations of their right to the freedom of the press, head of the census department at the Prisoners’ and Ex-prisoners’ committee, Abdul Nasser Farwana, said Monday.
Farwana said in a press statement released on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day that the Israeli occupation infringed on journalists’ right to the freedom of the press, shut down media institutions by force, cracked down on journalists, arrested dozens arbitrarily, and kept others in jail.
He said over 280 Israeli attacks against journalists have been documented since the outbreak of the anti-occupation Jerusalem Intifada, in early October.
“Dozens of journalists and press officers have been subjected to Israeli abductions during the Jerusalem Uprising while at least 19 others have been kept in occupation jails,” the activist noted.
He attributed such attacks and violations to the instructions given by Israeli political leaders to curb Palestinians’ right to the freedom of the press on allegations of incitement to violence. He added that the campaign aims at covering up the Israeli crimes perpetrated against the Palestinians on a quasi-daily basis.
Farwana called on the international media federations and journalists to seriously step in and work on releasing Palestinian journalists from Israeli jails and restoring Palestinians’ right to the freedom of the press.

A statistical report issued by Quds Press documented that over 1800 Jewish settlers stormed the plazas of the Aqsa Mosque during April.
The number outweighed the total number of settlers who broke into the Muslims’ holy site during the first three months of the year.
The report highlighted that settlers’ incursions pace was escalated during the Jewish holidays of Passover and others.
According to the statistical report, over 67 security members stormed the Aqsa within inspection rounds and for securing the settlers’ incursions into and performing Talmudic rituals at the Muslims’ sacred place.
Israeli policemen and Special Forces systematically attacked the Aqsa Mosque’s guards and the Awqaf staff. They deported three of them away from the Mosque for 15 days because of confronting settlers.
Israeli courts presented 10 indictments against worshipers and sit-inners at the holy site, the report stated. The report also documented an Israeli violation where the Temple Institute announced holding a secret wedding contract at al-Rahmah gate at the Aqsa Mosque regardless of the guards’ tightened measures.

The Murabitat (female sit-inners) al-Aqsa International Forum concluded on Saturday evening a series of activities on the role of Muslim women in protecting the al-Aqsa Mosque.
The forum, which kicked off on Friday under the sponsorship of the Women of al-Aqsa organization, discussed the possible ways to prop up women’s role in protecting Occupied Jerusalem and the holy al-Aqsa Mosque.
A Turkish minister said during the forum: “As soon as I caught sight of Occupied Jerusalem and entered al-Aqsa I felt that the holy Koran was embracing the olive trees. Nobody can realize the true value of the place unless one sees it with his/her own eyes.”
“Al-Aqsa is the place where you feel spiritually connected to other people for it is the place where all religions meet,” she added. Qatari journalist Ilham Bakr also said: “I’ve been to the occupied Palestinian territories for four times over the past five years and crept into the holy al-Aqsa for nine times without taking permission . . . I’d gone truly speechless upon every single occasion.”
For his part, activist Muhammad al-Arif said: “Occupied Jerusalem is not like any other capital. Neither is its soil. . . . We shall never forget Sultan Abdul Hamid II who was offered millions of cash but refused to sell Palestine. We also hail the Turkish government for its ongoing endeavors to lift the siege on Gaza.”
Founded in 2013, the Women of al-Aqsa organization has been active in boosting women’s role in protecting the holy al-Aqsa Mosque and the Islamic identity of Occupied Jerusalem city. Female Muslim sit-inners have been maintaining vigil at al-Aqsa Mosque—the third holiest site in Islam—to defend it against the increasing break-ins carried out by Israeli fanatic settlers and police on a quasi-daily basis.

Israeli police forces on Saturday violently attacked Palestinian citizens after they participated in the funeral of their relative in Occupied Jerusalem.
Anti-Judaization activist Nihad al-Zaghir said that Israeli policemen attacked the citizens after they buried their relative in the Muslim cemetery of Bab al-Rahma near the Aqsa Mosque.
Zaghir added that the policemen used clubs and pepper spray to attack the citizens at first before they fired tear gas and stun grenades at them, pointing out that several citizens suffered injuries in the attack.
In an attempt to justify their attack on the citizens, the police claimed it was not allowed to bury anyone in that area of the cemetery.

The Israeli occupation police refused to release a video documenting the murder of a young Palestinian lady and her brother who posed no threat to the occupation troops, Hebrew press said on Sunday.
According to the Israeli police version, 23-year-old Maram Saleh Abu Ismail and her 16-year-old brother Ibrahim refused their order to stop and posed a threat to officers.
The Israeli police further claimed that Maram wielded a knife before she was shot along with her brother, who was walking behind her, by the Israeli police.
Eyewitness accounts, however, contradict such Israeli claims, saying the two casualties posed no threat and were at a distance from the occupation troops, who talked to them in a Hebrew language which they did not understand.
Haaretz newspaper quoted Israeli police sources as stating that videos documenting live scenes cannot be released during the investigation phase.
According to the newspaper, similar recordings legitimizing police use of force were released in the past. Israeli police claimed, after searching the casualties’ bodies, that Ibrahim was holding a knife, which was discredited by eyewitness accounts.
The newspaper said a snapshot picked up at the scene shows the two martyrs lying on the ground 15 meters away from the checkpoint and in a place where no Israeli police officers were deployed.
MK Dov Khenin (Joint Arab List) demanded that "Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon and Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan launch an immediate probe into the scene and release the video".
Khenin said no recordings were released despite the fact that the checkpoint was equipped with several cameras. Maram, who was shot dead by the occupation troops, is a mother of two kids and was expecting another baby. She was killed on her way to al-Maqasid hospital in Occupied Jerusalem.

Head of the Islamic Movement in 1948 Occupied Palestine, Sheikh Raed Salah, spoke out against the Israeli sacrilegious schemes at the holy al-Aqsa Mosque and aggression on the peaceful Muslim worshipers.
Speaking in a videotaped speech, Sheikh Raed Salah warned of the increasing Israeli break-ins at al-Aqsa and attempts by Israeli fanatics to perform sacrilegious rituals.
“For the Israeli occupation, our presence at al-Aqsa has become a charge legitimizing our arrest and so have our prayers and peaceful vigils become,” said Sheikh Salah.
“Israel is a colonizing power. We are the original owners of the land; Israelis are outsiders and their occupying power shall perish soon,” he added. Sheikh Salah vowed that Palestinians will keep facing up to the Israeli occupation no matter the price.
“Neither executions, nor arrests, nor bans shall stop us from defending our holy al-Aqsa,” he stated. “We should remain steadfast and have faith that we will restore our holy site despite the surge in Israeli aggression.”
“Victory is around the corner. We shall win the struggle today, tomorrow or in a few years perhaps. This dream will come true soon,” he vowed. “We will stand by Occupied Jerusalem and al-Aqsa until our last breath,” Sheikh Salah further stated.
“We will maintain vigil in Occupied Jerusalem and al-Aqsa.” “We have the right to be at al-Aqsa. Despite Israeli gunfire, persecution, and abductions we will always enter al-Aqsa with pride in our hearts and souls,” he said.
“However, the Israeli occupation and its vandals have always been storming the site with fears in their hearts because deep inside they know well they are the intruders.” “We promise to keep defending al-Aqsa until we depart this life,” the activist concluded.

Israeli arbitrary abductions of Hamas leaders will only boost popular support for armed resistance and anti-occupation activism, Hamas said Thursday.
Hamas spokesman Husam Badran said in a press statement the arrests carried out by the Israeli occupation army are vain attempts at quelling anti-occupation activism.
“The surge in Israeli arrests against Hamas leaders comes to mar the joy sparked by the decisive victory won by the Islamic Bloc at Birzeit University” said Badran.
“This is what neither the Israeli occupation nor the Palestinian Authority (PA), chaired by Mahmoud Abbas, have been expecting.”
Over recent days, a striking surge has been documented in Israeli arrest sweeps against Hamas affiliates in an attempt to snuff out the flames of anti-occupation activism across the occupied Palestinian territories.

Quds Press news agency reported that 1,058 Israeli settlers stormed the Aqsa Mosque during the Passover Jewish holiday in 24-28 April.
192 Settlers broke into the Muslims’ holy site on Thursday and 480 others stormed the mosque early April.
According to Quds Press, the guards of the Aqsa Mosque along with worshipers were able to confront some of the incursions while dozens of intruders attempted to present some sacrifices at al-Aqsa’s gates last Friday.
38 decisions of deportation away from the Aqsa Mosque and the Old City of Occupied Jerusalem have been handed over to dozens of Jerusalemite youths since the Passover’s eve.

Noted Palestinian religious and official figures on Thursday held a news conference to highlight Israel's escalation of its violations against the Aqsa Mosque.
The participants in the conference underlined the Israeli violations against the Aqsa Mosque during the last two weeks, especially the Jewish settlers' mass break-ins at the Aqsa Mosque and their attempts to perform rituals in its courtyards.
Preacher of the Aqsa Mosque Sheikh Ikrima Sabri told journalists that the Israeli occupation state confirmed in the recent week that it would remain persistent in its violations against the Aqsa Mosque.
"These violations have escalated, and what calls attention is that the settlers videotaped their break-ins, broadcast them through the Internet and encouraged the Jews around the world to come to Palestine," Sheikh Sabri stated.
He condemned the Israeli measures in Jerusalem and at the Aqsa Mosque as "provocative to the feelings of all Muslims," pointing out that the Israeli occupation does not care about the consequences of its actions or any angry reactions or condemnation statements.
"We regret that Arab and Islamic organizations like the Arab League have referred the issue of Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque to the Security Council or the UN, and this reflects the weakness of Arabs and their impotence to solve their own problems," the Sheikh added.
For his part, lawyer and presidential adviser Ahmed al-Ruwaidi has called for ending the national division and come together for Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque.
"The settlers have continued to attempt to perform Talmudic prayers inside the Aqsa Mosque, and if anyone of the murabiṭun and mosque guards confronted that, the detention policy would be applied against them, unlike the settlers who are only escorted by the occupation police out of the Aqsa Mosque," Ruwaidi stated.
He emphasized that the native people of Jerusalem would never allow Israel to divide the Aqsa Mosque temporally or spatially, describing the Mosque as "part of the Muslims' faith."

The Supreme Council of Religious Ruling (Fatwa) in Palestine warned of Israeli intents to hold sway over Palestinian buildings in Occupied Jerusalem by altering the Arnona statute.
According to the Fatwa Council, the Israeli occupation authorities (IOA) have already paved the way for the move by notifying Palestinians in Occupied Jerusalem that their estates will be tagged as “abandoned property.”
The Israeli occupation municipality claimed the move aims at motivating Palestinian owners to rent or sell empty buildings.
The council spoke out against such an Israeli scheme, saying it rather makes part of a preplanned agenda to hold sway over Palestinian property in favor of illegal settlers.
The Fatwa Council called on the Palestinian natives of Occupied Jerusalem to stand on their guard to such an Israeli scheme of ethnic cleansing and forced deportation.
The move comes at a time when tension has reached a peak in Occupied Jerusalem as Israeli fanatics have been vandalizing Muslims’ the holy al-Aqsa Mosque on the occasion of the Passover holiday.
The Fatwa Council urged the Muslim worshipers to intensify their presence and maintain vigil at al-Aqsa so as to defend it against the Israeli sacrilegious schemes. The council further denounced Israel’s closure of the Ibrahimi Mosque, in al-Khalil, before the Muslim worshipers while boosting break-ins at the holy site by Israeli fanatics under the pretext of Jewish holidays.
The council appealed to the international community to speak up against Israel’s oppressive policies and violations of Muslims’ right to the freedom of worship.
